Boy Names beginning with M

I'm 34 weeks pregnant, expecting my second boy, and we're having a little trouble coming up with a name. We want a name that will compliment and go well with our son Miles, who is 3 years old. It was fairly easy coming up his name. Want either a one syllable or 3 syllable name beginning with M.

Also any opinions on the names Macmillan, Mackinley, Matteo, Macclaren. Are the names Mackinley and Macclaren just for girls now??? Would love some feedback and ideas. thanks much

I'm personally not a big fan of last-names-as-first-names, so I don't think Macmillan, Mackinley, or Macclaren work for a boy or a girl. Someone else may be a less biased judge of that. And doesn't Mac- mean "son of"? If so, then I'd like a mac- name if it included the father's name. For example MacArthur for the son of Arthur.

I like Matteo/Mateo a lot, but it has such an ethnic feel that I wouldn't use it unless you have some Spanish/Latino/Italian heritage. Again, that could just be me.

Other M names that I think work with Miles... (Some of these are 2-syllables, but maybe they'd still work.)

Max/Maximus
Malcolm
Matthias
Mason
Maverick
Maddox
Morgan
Malachi/Malakai

And a few non-M names that I think go well with Miles in case you're not set on an M...

Simon
Oliver
Elliott
Theodore
Emmett
Graham
Calvin

Hope that gives you a few more ideas!

Macmillan sounds like a boy to me; the other 2 Mac names sound like girls, even though they were originally for boys. I agree with the comments on Matteo - it's great if it's part of your heritage but would seem odd with Miles if you're not Spanish or Italian.

Some M names I like that go with Miles:

Marcus
Mathias
Micah
Mitchell
Marshall
Maxfield (Max)
Mason (Mace)
Maclean

Some other names to go with Miles (I love Miles by the way!):

Owen
Griffin
Jude

Good luck!

I would say that Mackinley is a girls' name these days, although I've heard McKenna or McKenzie more.

Hello and welcome.

Miles is a GREAT name.

You didn't ask for the following little piece of advice, I realize that. Of course, as usual, I feel compelled to say it anyway. Since you are looking for a name to compliment Miles, I would recommend a different letter of the alphabet. In my opinion, each sibling's name retains more distinctiveness when they are in the same "vein" without sounding too matchy/cutesy.

Example- brothers-

Mason, Marshall, Michael-

or brothers-

Mason, Parker, Grant

Is is just me, or does the second set sound better?

Just giving you a little food for thought...If you want them to have a connection, you might consider names that have the same no. of letters or moving to the next letter of the alphabet. This opens up the field of names to choose from, too!

Five letters- I like Miles &

Grant

Rhett

Chase

For letter N-, I like

Neil

Nash

You will notice all of the above names are one syllable. I think one syllable names, in general, sound best with Miles. I like any of the following-

Chance

Dane

Ian

Dean

Kane

Grey

Ross

Keep us posted!

Ginger pretty much summed up my own thoughts. If you "want a name that will compliment and go well with ... Miles," an M name isn't it. Sure, they'll "match," but your kids aren't a matched set, and their names don't have to be either. ;) Two names beginning with the same letter generally doesn't sound very complimentary. Instead, it really takes away from the individual beauty of both names. Per Ginger's example, Miles and Macmillan just sounds like a bunch of Ms, and I'd be much less likely to notice either name individually. Miles and Oliver, for example, would seem like great brother names to me, being very similar in style -- but not matchy. Or you could move on to an N name, if you really want a pattern, or simply use another five-letter name. Nolan (also an N), Simon, Eliot, etc.

FWIW, I love Miles. ;)

ETA: After I posted this, I thought maybe something like Emmet or Emery might appeal. They beging with the "em" sound, but the short e beginning definitely breaks them up a bit so they don't seem overly matchy, KWIM? They're also both five letters like Miles. Miles and Emmet or Miles and Emery are very complimentary, IMO. HTH (again LOL)
