Boys Name for Girl- Experience/Opinions?

We're considering a traditionally male name for our daughter. It's not a macho-sounding name, by any stretch of the imagination, but historically it has been used for boys. I know that it is not uncommon to use a boys' name for a girl - I can tell from recent birth announcements and also from this board that names like Ryan, Evan, Grayson/Graysen, Austin/Austyn, and so on, are being used for girls. But before we make a decision, I'd love to hear from anyone who has used or considered a boys' name for a girl (or anyone who has a boys' name herself or knows someone who has one!) - any problems? regrets? advice?

Thanks!! ~Dee

hey. I love your idea! We are thinking of using a boys name as well. I think that it is so special to have a name that is easy to prounouce however different from everyone in the room. we are thinknig about going with brayden, if it is a girl. Most of our family and friends think that we are not doing the right thing but we love it. I would say go for it! You could even pick a real girly name for her middle name!

Who would consider "Dawn" a boys' name? I've never heard that one before. I think it's pretty, and very obviously feminine.

But Don is a boy's name, and depending on where you live, Dawn and Don may be pronounced the same. I had a Dawn and Don in my junior high class, and it was a little confusing. People who were familiar with Don heard Dawn as a boy name even though it obviously isn't. Anyway, I understand the confusion and can see why people who hear the name Rikki Dawn might picture Ricky Don(ald).

Ah, good point. Paired with a more unisex name, I can see where it'd be pretty confusing unless you saw it written down first.

I have a mostly boy or dog name (hehe)= "Casey". I have always liked it and thought it was different. It's actually my mom's maiden name.
I like boy's names for girls. This was on my list-"Chayse". I got it from designer on a TLC show I think!
I only have boys and I think if I had a third it would be a boy too, but just in case I love Avery now for a girl only.

Good luck!

Dee,

If you like a name use it. Our second DD has a traditionally boys name, although now it is more of a unisex name. We spelled it really feminine to make sure others would not be confused later in life (dorm assignments etc). We went with Ryleigh Danielle. We loved it and went with it.

So you kind of have to do what you like.
