HI! I am due to have my third son on March 3, and S.O. and I are NOT able to come up with a name!!! I have two older sons, Joshua Patrick (6) and Matthew James (2), and he has two older sons from his previous marriage, Christian David (10) and Tristan Charles (8). (Yes, this makes BOY #5 for us altogether!!!)
We are soooooo far from a concensus, it's RIDICULOUS!!! There's really nothing that "jumps out" at me, and Dave (S.O.) & I have totally different taste in names...I need help!!!
I guess I'm looking for a name that goes well with Joshua and Matthew (my preference), but that is unique/somewhat uncommon (Dave's preference). I have NO idea what this is, but to give you an example, here are some names that I wrote down:
Andrew
Adam
Benjamin
Bennett
Caleb
Daniel
Jared
Jesse
Jonah
Nathan
Nicholas
Samuel
Sean/Shawn
Trevor
Here are some that Dave wrote down:
Walker
Thane
Piers(Pierce)
Osborn
Lachlan
Lance
Elton
Clive
Brennan
Averill
Axel
Ashley
Alton
Allister
Adler
Ace
Abel
Here is a somewhat agreed-upon list (ones that we're both okay with but not sold on):
Dane
Curtis
Timothy
Jacob
William
Ethan
Jacob
Bryce
We're not really on the same page, as you can see.
I recently started thinking about the name Colby...does it go w/Josh(ua) & Matt(hew)? Dave *said* he liked it, but he often just goes w/what I say to avoid argument...I really HATE when he does that b/c it gets me thinking about a name (or starting to like it) and then he says he didn't like it after all. (He did this with Nathan & Kyle too)...
We both like the name Jace, and I was thinking maybe Colby Jace with the nickname C.J. I just don't know. We could also use Curtis and another "J" middle name & still use the nn C.J. (for some reason, CJ is growing on me.) We've gone through the baby book a million times, and still nothing strikes me. I've looked online...nada...starting to get really frustrated and we're running out of time.
Anyone have an input or other ideas??? Thanks in advance!!! (P.S. The baby will have my last name--Miller.)
Thanks!
Tina

Hello and congratulations on the boy! Little boys are so special to their moms!!!
Here are my thoughts- To go with- Joshua Patrick (6) and Matthew James (2), Christian David (10) and Tristan Charles (8)
You have selected top 5 names. Your husband chose names that were in the #200 range at the time kids were born. BIG range there! I really think you could branch out just a little from what you selected and still find a name that hubby could live with. Check out SSA site #80-150 and see if you don't find something you both like.
Comments on your lists-
Andrew - of course you would like but too popular for hubby's taste
Adam - Perfect, falls mid-range for both of you- nice compromise- lovely choice with all four other boys
Benjamin - Too traditional for your husband.
Bennett - NICE choice, falls in between in style.
Caleb - I would use a new letter since NONE of four boys start with same letter.
Daniel - Too common for hubby.
Jared - Perfect. The first name that came to mind for me. Of course, would be playing favorites with Joshua...
Jesse - Nah, too edgy for hubby.
Jonah - Another good one. Has the "Christian" sound but slides in with your boys too.
Nathan - Slides in nicely.
Nicholas - Can't see hubby accepting.
Samuel - Too old fashioned for dh.
Sean/Shawn - Might work.
Trevor - Good one. In that range I'm talking about!
Here are some that Dave wrote down:
Walker - Sure you couldn't warm up to this one, seems like a good compromise.
Thane - Doesn't fit your style.
Piers(Pierce) - Great name, but again, can't see you warming to.
Osborn - Ditto.
Lachlan - Locke makes a great name, very cute for a baby brother to Josh & Matt. Haven't done L- yet either. Sounds great with Tristan & Christian... Think about it. Still a very traditional name...
Lance - Uhmm, another good "slide in" name.
Elton - Nah.
Clive - Too edgy for you.
Brennan - Sounds great with his boys.
Averill - Too feminine.
Axel - Too edgy for the mix.
Ashley - Son wouldn't appreciate. What about Ashton instead???
Alton - Nah.
Allister - I like it, does that count?
Adler- Nah.
Ace - What about Asa, nn Ace?
Abel - Nah.
Here is a somewhat agreed-upon list (ones that we're both okay with but not sold on):
Dane - Good for the mix.
Curtis - Doesn't sound great with his boys.
Timothy - Sounds great with yours.
Jacob - no, no, no
William - Good with your boys.
Ethan - Good for the whole group.
Bryce - This one could work too.
So my list for you two-
He should reconsider your- Jared, Bennett, Adam, Nathan, Jonah, Shawn, Trevor
You should reconsider- Walker, Lachlan, Lance
Together you might've nailed it with- Dane, Ethan or Bryce
And I'm adding Ashton and Asa as tweeks on your lists.
Others that came to mind for you two- Mitchell, Isaiah, Simon, Quinn, Ramsey, Cole, Wesley/Weston, Levi, Landon, Ian, Asher
One other name came to mind- Kyler- It has the more common sound of Kyle/Tyler but has an edge like many that your husband likes and seems to be a nice compromise between Joshua, Matthew, Christian, and Tristan. Just a thought>
Take care and try to enjoy the journey to the perfect name. Ginger
I like Caleb a lot. It goes with Matthew, Joshua and Christian (They didn't really name two boys Christian and Tristian)and I guess it goes with Tristian too...
Caleb Jace(sounds like Chace?) Miller (CJ)sounds great ,,,My favorite
Jace Caleb Miller (JC) for short
Caleb Bryce Miller is also great hmnnnnnn I like this a lot too
Caleb Joshua Miller is the best I think LOL CJ too
I immediately thought of Blake Colby Miller. I think it is just off the charts enough for your hubby and just flowy enough for your preferences.
Good luck
I don't know how to solve your dilemma exactly. Matthew, Joshua and Christian are all traditional type names, Tristan is more modern/trendy
that leaves you open to do what you want really.
I like your list way more than his list, but I really don't like Colby. I guess just knowing ONE girl named Colby just ruins it for me for boys. Or maybe I just don't like it
maybe you want to avoid the 4 first initials you already have, especially with a blended family. that way no one feels that the new one "belongs" to one set of siblings more than the other
which is too bad because the name I like the most on all tose lists is Jared
Andrew - fine with the other names
Adam - OK with the other names
Benjamin - OK with the names, but awfully popular lately
Bennett - OK with the other names, but not one of my favorites
Caleb - kind of out of sync with all the other names
Daniel - in the Matthew style, off the others, much "older" sounding
Jared - great if it weren't for the J start along with Joshua
Jesse - much too girly
Jonah - way out of sync with the other names
Nathan - good pairing with the other names
Nicholas - OK with other names, but very very popular
Samuel - it's classic like Matthew & Joshua, but I just don't see it with the others
Sean/Shawn - Shawn spelling OK - Shawn & Josh sound an awful lot alike
Trevor - great if it didn't start with T like Tristan
the only one from his list that I like comes even remotely close to sounding right in that family is Brennan - and I like that a lot.
Dane - out of sync with the style of the others
Curtis - can't see this with the others, somewhat older name, traditional, but not in same way as matthew & Joshua
Timothy - OK with others except for T start
Jacob - OK with others except for J start
William - ooooh, another William - OLD name that has become a NEW fad
Ethan - this one would be OK with all those others
Jacob - see what I said up on your list
Bryce - not too bad with the others
good luck
What I like best from your list:
-Nathan
-Sean/Shawn
What I like best from his:
-Pierce
-Brennan
What I like from the combo list:
-Ethan
-Bryce
What I like best:
-COLBY!! It doesn't "fit" completely w/ the style of the other names but it's not too far off either if that's that important to you. My second choice would be Ethan.
You could also do Cole. There are actually a lot of names that would fit into your family.
Hi there, Tina. Wow, it sounds like you guys have a bit of a dilemma! Look at it this way though; at least your dh suggested some names. You can't even get that out of some men, LOL.
I love your ds' names. Joshua & Matthew (I have one of those too!) are two of my favourites. Christian & Tristan are cool too, although that must get diffacult to say together.
Here are my thoughts on your lists:
Andrew -I love this one. It seems to go w/your ds' names, but not Christian & Tristan so much.
Adam -This is nice, but I wouldn't do AdaM Miller.
Benjamin -I like this a lot. It's very common, but clearly that doesn't bother you.
Bennett -That's a nice alternative to Benjamin, w/out the popularity issues.
Caleb -I don't like this one w/your last name either, but it's a nice name.
Daniel -I like that a lot.
Jared -That's nms.
Jesse -Cute! It's a little close to Joshua, but probably not a big deal. I think this should be one to bridge the gap between your taste & your dh's taste.
Jonah -That's really nice, but also maybe a bit close to Joshua.
Nathan -I like this, but apperently your dh doesn't. It is a good solid name that's not too common though.
Nicholas -That one is really popular, but I like it.
Samuel -That's fine. I don't like the possibility of SaM Miller.
Sean/Shawn -That's nms, but Sean is definitly the better spelling.
Trevor -I like that a lot, but not TrevoR MilleR.
Here are some that Dave wrote down:
Walker -That's fine, but it ends in that pesky er again.
Thane -That's neat! I like it.
Piers(Pierce) -That's also really nice.
Osborn -This only reminds me of The Penguin in Batman, but that's probably just me...
Lachlan -That's handsome.
Lance -Hm, that's nms.
Elton -That's okay, but it's hard to say not followed by John.
Clive -That's neat.
Brennan -I like that, & it seems to fit in really well w/all of your ds' names.
Averill -That's sort of girly, sorry.
Axel -Rose?
Ashley -This is a boy name, but Dave & I may be the only people who agree! What I mean is, this is way too popular for girls these days.
Alton -That's nms.
Allister -Ooh, I like that. I don't like it w/your ln though.
Adler -That's nms.
Ace -Cute. I like it as a nn though.
Abel -Darling. Abe is a great nn.
Here is a somewhat agreed-upon list (ones that we're both okay with but not sold on):
Dane -That's nms.
Curtis -I like that a lot.
Timothy -Cute, but TiM Miller runs into each other.
Jacob -That's a nice name, but way too popular.
William -I love this (ds' name), but I don't like WilliaM Miller.
Ethan -That's nms, but it works w/your family well.
Bryce -That's kind of nice.
Do you not like Brennan? I think it works really well for you. Brendan is a good choice too. I also really like Curtis for you guys. Colby is cute, & fits in nicely w/your crew. Here are a few more suggestions that might work-
Alec
Ashton-This isn't my personal style, but your dh might like it. It's like Ashley, but more acceptable for boys these days.
