I wanted to get some honest opinions on the name Bronwyn for a girl. I have really started liking it lately. My DH and I still can't decide between our favorites. We like Evelyn (family name), Vivian, Ireland (DH fav) and now Bronwyn. Does anyone like Bronwyn better than our other choices or should we just stick to those three? By the way, popularity is a big issue for us. We absolutely don't want a popular name! Thanks in advance!!!

I love Bronwyn! I think it's fantastic.

From your list, Vivian is definitely my favorite. It's so pretty and not over-used at all.

I love Bronwen...even more than your other listed choices! I learned after I started liking Bronwyn that the "en" spelling is the correct one for girls. The yn ending is the masculine version. Check out my earlier posts about it both on this board and the other ivillage board: baby names, beyond the trends. You'll learn a lot!~

I do not think it is esp popular anywhere-- I say go for it (but seriously consider using the Bronwen spelling)

I like the name Bronwen, spelled like this. I really like Ireland, too. I would definitely choose Ireland out of the 4 and next would be Bronwen. I dislike Vivian and Evelyn.

Vivian is my hands-down favourite from your list. Bronwyn is probably my last choice. To me, it lacks the elegance and classic appeal of Vivian and Evelyn. Ireland is okay.

I love the name Bronwen (spelled like this)! I also love Vivian and Evelyn. Ireland is nmsaa. It seems very trendy, especially compared to your other lovely choices. I think if you are worried about popularity, Bronwen and Vivian would be better than Evelyn. I do love them all though! My order would be:

Vivian
Bronwen
Evelyn

I love Bronwyn just the way it is. The "y" adds a bit of mystique to it. I like Ireland second, but Bronwyn is my first by far!

Love the name Bronwyn---very Welsh (the Bronwen spelling is more Anglicized, but both are accepted spellings) and not at all trendy here in the States. Very classy, strong, yet feminine. If our first born would have been a girl, that's the girl name we were going to use(our 18 month old boy is named Owain, instead (the Welsh/English spelling of Owen.)

My second choice is Vivian, then Evelyn. Although these are very nice traditional names, they sound a little fusty to me, while Bronwyn seems to sound more of the moment without resorting to trendiness.

I'm not a big fan of place names, so that puts Ireland out of the running for me. Hope this helps---Holly

I like Bronwyn but Bronwen is better. The wyn is still masculine even if Bronwyn is now an acceptable spelling.

I love Vivian too but Viviana a tad more.

This simply isn't true. Bronwen and Bronwyn are both Welsh spellings, with Bronwyn the masculine form. In this country, Bronwyn is the more common spelling, even though it technically isn't correct for girls. The Welsh laugh at us naming our girls Bronwyn.

When I posted some time ago about using Bronwyn, I got lots of responses. This is one of the funniest ones:

Gwen is female, Gwyn is male (like 'la' and 'le' in French or nina and nino in Spanish) so Bronwen is the correct spelling and since in Europe it's more unusual to use a name from a different culture/language, you rarely find Bronwyn, save US/Aussie ex-pats living here (I've seen one and immediately asked if she was a fellow American, based purely on the spelling of her name. She was. It stands out here the way Devyn would.) Since Bron means 'breast' a Welsh friend of mine finds Bronwyn quite funny in a 'man boobs' kind of way. She's married to an Englishman and knows they don't realize that it's male but still, we're warped enough to laugh about it ;o)
