Can I use this name after all?
| Mon, 12-13-2004 - 10:45am |
When I was pg w/ #2, my SIL was pg w/ #3 at the same time. I had the name Emma at the top of my list of girls, but had not shared my names with anyone yet. So SIL announces that she LOVES Emma and will use it if she has a girl. I was bummed, but I went with another name, b/c she "claimed" it first. Anyway, she ended up having a boy. And now she is talking about having her tubes tied b/c she is not going to have any more kids. So, what do you gals think? Can I use Emma for my baby if it's a girl this time around? She's obviously not going to use it....or should I just nix the whole idea and come up with something else? I'd really appreciate your opinions on this one. YIA!

What did you end up doing for your #2 since she didn't have a girl after all?
As for the next one, if you still love Emma and its the #1 name on your list, I don't think its a problem.

Good heavens, yes, use it.
Angie-
My #2 was a girl. I named her Abigail (Abby), which was also at the top of my list. But now that leaves only Emma for a girls name that I LOVE. I have 2 DD's- Ashley and Abby.
Thanks so much for your input!
Kate

Of course you can. Who knows if she will have anymore, or if it would even be a girl. She doesn't own the name.
I say go for it! She's not going to use it and you really did have it on your list! You can tell her that. If anything she might be glad because now she'll have a neice with the name she loves! This reminds me of "Friends", it was the name Monica liked, but Rachel wanted to use it.
Good luck,
Ali
my thought is that you don't spring it on her with the birth of the baby - talk to her about it beforehand. tell her the truth, that you had it planned for your baby when she was having what turned out to be a boy, but since you hadn't told anyone your names, you felt she claimed it first, but that now that she's not having any more children, is the name Emma fair game now. see how she feels. it could be that she likes the name Emma so much she'd be honored to have a niece with that name, have the name used somewhere in the family.
one word of caution though, this name is EXTREMELY popular. and it's still going strong. it's been ranked #2 for the past 3-4 years and where I am they are everywhere.
good luck.
