Can't decide on spelling - Adelyn
| Sun, 03-04-2007 - 1:54pm |
We don't know the gender of the baby, but I really would like to name my girl Adelyn. I thought it was prounouced Add-ah-lynn. My mom thought it was pronouced Aid-Lynn. Can you please help determine which spelling looks best and won't confuse people on how to say it? I didn't put this as a poll because I was curious how you pronouced it when you saw the name and also if you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks!

I think that I would have prn Adelyn - Addi-lynn. If you want the prn Add-ah-lynn (which is cute, btw) I would spell it:
Addalyn or Adalyn
Definitely Adelyn, the others look silly and ruin a perfectly gorgeous name by making it appear trendy. Most people would pronounce it correctly.

I like "Addelyn Rose" the best. I also think "Addie" is a cute nn.

I would have pronounced Adelyn they same way you do. I like that spelling the best. Beautiful name btw. :)

I like the Adelyn spelling the best.
Adelyn IS pronounced AD-e-lin, as you suspected(like Madelyn without the M ... a good association to help others remember the name if they do say it wrong ).
I actually can't imagine anyone messing that one up, though I know many will screw up even the simplest of names. ;) Definitely stick with the normal "Adelyn" spelling, however. FWIW, the Add- variations don't help with pronunciation at all, since the extra D appears to change it to ad-EE-lyn (like the nn Addie with -lyn tacked onto the end).
You may also like Adeline, which offers the pronunciation of your choice -- AD-e-line, ad-u-LEEN or even AD-e-lin (much like the -line in Caroline).

Adelyn Rose - great pick!

I agree 100% with everything Nikki said. No offense to your mother, but I cannot imagine how in the world anyone could get AID-lynn out of Adelyn. I mean, if she saw Madelyn, would she pronounce it MAID-lynn? And as for the poster who said that she would have assumed "Addie-Lynn," I don't understand that, either. To me, Addilyn is MUCH more likely to garner that particular mispronunciation than Adelyn. And anyway, if I *heard* that your daughter's name was Adelyn, this is the spelling that I would assume.
Stick with the original spelling. I love this name, and to misspell it should be a crime. It's too great a name to ruin it like that.
