copycat names

Suppose you thought of a special name for your baby that had deep significance to you, because you researched your geneaology to find that unique name (it was the name of an ancestor) and not only that, but the name was rather unique. Just as an example, say you name her "Patriziana". It has a lot of meaning to you, not only because its an ancestor's name, but it also reflects your ethnic heritage/culture as well. So, that's the name you pick. Suppose then, that your a couple you know have a baby a few months later..and guess what they name her? Your child's name. Obviously copied from you. How would you feel about that?

I have to be honest and say that I would take it as a total compliment. Where do we think names come from in the first place? Even Gwenyth Paltrow's daughter, Apple, is the name of another little girl in her husband's band, etc. I can understand that the name was significant for you to name her/him whatever you did for whatever personal reason that was close to your heart, but that doesn't mean that you should be angry with someone else for also using that name. It's like thinking there should be a patent on air, or something just as silly. I've also always hated when sisters or cousins or best friends...whatever...will say "I'm going to name my son Zachary, so you can't use that one when you get pregnant", regardless of who is pregnant first and their personal preferences, etc. Besides, people fall out of touch, move away, etc, and who really cares if your son or daughter shares the name of someone else. They're already sharing it with an ancestor!

Just my opinoin, of course.

Maybe that's the answer then - when someone copies those of us who don't like it we should just point out someone who would be 'flattered' or 'totally complimented' and call over Ms Unoriginality and say psssst, guess what she's going to name her kid!

I also would not find it flattering. I think its rude. Especially if someone came up to me and specifically told me that she was "Using" my child's name.

I have to say that I agree with Kami. I think it's 'silly' to be hung up on such a thing. If the worst thing you ever have to worry about in life is the fact that someone copied your kid's name, then you're pretty darn lucky! Let me put this in perspective for you. My first born son, Hayden, died at the age of 7 because his 8 year old friend found his father's hand gun in the closet, and wanted to show it to my son. He accidentally shot my son in the head and killed him.

There's just so much more to life than getting upset at someone for using your child's name. And if you're wound that tightly about it, then perhaps there's nothing that can be said to make you feel otherwise, but I personally would want to choose better battles.
Besides, if the name was found through your ancestory, then you're doing exactly what you hate of other mom's to be doing: You're copy-catting your ancestor's name! Same thing, in my opinoin.

I honestly dont think that anyone was comparing someone copying their kids name to the tragedy of losing a child. I am so sorry for your loss. What happened to your son is heartbreaking and by no means on the same level of name stealing. But honestly, the comparison is way off.

I can think of 1000 things in life that are worse than someone stealing a name but the questions was would it bother you not is it the worst thing you can possibly imagine
