I posed this question a few months ago and appreciate all who responded. With 3 1/2 weeks to go before my due date we still have not decided on a name. The name "Cross" is coming up again. What do you think? I would appreciate your responses (good and bad) even if you responded last time. Your opinions will likely help us decide once and for all. THANKS!!!

Cross is a bit over the top, even for me as a first. It makes me think almost exclusively of Catholicism (which is fine if you are Catholic, not so cool if you're not ) and also of being cross (mad). I prefer the Spanish form, Cruz or maybe placing Cross in the middle slot, even. I think Cross would sound good as a middle for just about anything except Christopher or Christian!) A few suggestions showing what I mean:

Andrew Cross
Bernard Cross
Calvin Cross
Dante Cross
Edward Cross
Fabian Cross
George Cross
Henry Cross
Ian Cross
John Cross
Kenneth Cross
Laurence Cross
Malcolm Cross
Nathaniel Cross
Oliver Cross
Peter Cross
Quentin Cross (Ooh, this one's movie star feeling!)
Roland Cross
Spencer Cross
Timothy Cross
Ulysses Cross
Vincent Cross
Warren Cross
Xavier Cross
Zachary Cross

(I only have two favorite Y names and neither is particularly good with anything English, so I skipped Y)

But I just wanted to list the first name for each letter that popped into my head to go with Cross just to show how well I think Cross works as an offbeat middle! I hope that helped some!

Honestly, the religious connotation made me cringe. I'm not a particularly religious person, and hearing this made me think of some of the fanatically relgious families I've known in my life who have children with unusual names with religious meanings. (I don't mean to say that religion is a bad thing or names with religious connotations is a bad thing, just that this connotation in particular is a bit much for me.) Even out of the religious sense, it makes me think of crucifiction with is pretty horrifying, and secondly of being "cross" or angry. Neither are good associations.

That said, I do like the SOUND of the name, apart from the association. I definitely see the appeal on that level. If the name has personal signficance to you, I'd recommend using at a middle name like the pp suggested. Or if it is just the sound you like I'm sure the creative ladies on this board can come up with a long list of names with similar sounds that don't have the same connotation.

Good luck!

Is Cross your maiden name? If so, then go for it.

How about Crews? Similar sounding. I like Crews much better than Cross.

Good Luck!

Well it sounds alright, but it looks all wrong, in the sense that i think, angry and cross-over the road, and crucifix, in that order. How about Cruz? There is a british celebrity baby with that name (boy) means crucifix in Spanish. I really like it actually, Cruz.

I personally don't like it. If I met someone with that name, my first reaction would be "what??"

I like the suggestions of the other posters. Cruz is a much nicer name that won't have the potential to offend anyone or put anyone off with the connotations (angry, religious etc.)

Sorry... I know how hard this is, especially with the clock ticking.

good luck!!

I really dislike it a lot. To be cross is to frankly be a big jerk...so I wouldn't want it to be attached to one of my kiddo's.

Sorry,

Lisa

If it's a name that won't go away for you & your spouse I say you should use it regardless of what others might think of it. It wouldn't be my 1st pick but it's not bad either.

To be honest, I don't really like it. I like how it sounds strong and masculine, but the name jsut isn't my style. How about Tarik, Wyatt, Sawyer, Thatcher, or Dean?

I agree with what others have said: the Christian reference is very in-your-face. I guess if you mean it to be, then that might be okay, but just be aware that you would be making a big statement. I am a Christian, and I actually think I would find it a little irreverent to call a baby Cross - it takes something away from the power of the word and image of it to be caling it across a playground. I think you might find that if you're not religious, the name might make people think you are (which you might not like), and if you are a Christian yourself that some other Christians might be put off by the name too. Sorry to be such a downer :(

I do like the suggestion of Cruz (Posh Spice's youngest son!) which is Spanish for cross. In Spanish it's pronounced croose (to rhyme with moose), but you could easily pronounce it as cruise (with the z sound) to avoid confusion.

Are there other boys' names in the running?

I live in Deep South where surnames are common, I've known a couple of Crosses.

I like it! Anytime you choose something out of the ordinary, prepare to be criticized.
However, also prepare for some great reactions! I chose very different names for my kids. Some of the comments haven't been great, but the ones that stick out in my memory have been the really good reactions. Those carry you through the negative. My kids are now 7 & 9 and love having different names.

Would love to know what your mn choice/choices are!

Best wishes, Ginger
