So I've heard of a few girls in our area that are named Ellie which I thought was cute. So I ask my husband if he liked that name and he proceeded to tell me about how its the worst name that you could ever name your child. He comes from a very small town and an "ellie" according to him is a slang term for elephant trunk (meaning a boy's uncircumsied privates). So growing up if they were refering to someone who was uncircumsied they had an "ellie". I'm hoping this was just a thing in his neighborhood because I can't imagine that all these beautiful girls would be named that if it were a widespread slang term. Has anyone heard of this? (But I still LUV the name Ella)

I didn't know that but, well, people still use Peter which is a nn for a male's "private part" and to me Mary Jane is a very obvious marijuana reference.

I've never heard of that. And like you, I can't imagine that it's a very widespread term since so many little girls are nicknamed Ellie now.

I have lived in 9 different states and have NEVER heard this term. Also with the number of uncircumcised boys approaching 50-60% they are almost becoming the norm, not something to be made fun of.

I am guessing that this was just something that was used in his neighborhood.

NEVER heard of that! In fact my four year old is named Eleri and we call her Ellie most of the time. Nobody has ever mentioned anything like that to us. I love the name.

I've never heard that one either and neither has my husband. So it mostly likely was a very local term. I agree that with the declining circumcision rates, it's probably going to die out as a slang term term anyway. At least with the younger crowd, of which your daughter would be a member.

And I think the name Ella is very cute. You could just call her Ella and discourage the Ellie nn if it makes you husband uncomfortable. Most people will call a child what the parents call her, and if they don't you can just correct them. At least that has worked with my oldest.

Wow, never heard that one! I'll have to ask hubby when he gets home...

We have an Ellie right next door, and one of my closest friends is Elly short for Eleanor.
