My dh and I aren't pregnant or ttc, we're planning/dreaming! We have narrowed the long list of name possibilities down and have come down to three girls names and four boys names. . .we're stuck on middle names though - why is it so hard to come up with good middle names?

Our Favorite Girls Names:

Audrey ? A. (personal fav.)
Mackenzie ? A. (though I feel it's been overused, dh's favorite)
Lindsey ? A.

Our Favorite Boys Names:

Garrett ? A. (I'm torn between this one and Blaine)
Dakota ? A. (dh's favorite)
Blaine ? A.
Cole ? A. (not sure if we'll use Nicolas as a fn or just Cole, dh doesn't like nn's so it will prob be Cole)

TIA,
Karen

short of knowing family names that you might want to honor - here goes:

Audrey Brianne, Audrey Christine, Audrey Catherine, Audrey Caitlin, Audrey Corinne, Audrey Christine (or Christina), Audrey Gisele, Audrey Janelle, Audrey Joelle, Audrey Jacqueline, Audrey Johanna, Audrey Kathleen, Audrey Kristin, Audrey Michelle, Audrey Nicole, Audrey Noelle, Audrey Paige, Audrey Susanne (or Susannah).

(personally I prefer Aubrey with a B to Audrey with a D, it's a little fresher. I guess I knew too many "frumpy" Audrey's and most of the ones I know are in their 50s or 60s. most of the above middles would work with Aubrey except for Brianne, and for Aubrey I would add Danielle)

Mackenzie is not nearly as "overused" as Lindsey. It hit a little stride in the early 90s for a quick flash of popularity, but it never approached the likes of Ashley, Jennifer, Katelyn, Emily, Emma, Madison, Hailey. Lindsey was extremely popular in the 80s. There are lots of 20-somethings running around with that name. Lots.

Anyhow - Mackenzie Brianne, Mackenzie Brielle, Mackenzie Danielle, Mackenzie Dawn, Mackenzie Gisele, Mackenzie Janelle, Mackenzie Joelle, Mackenzie Jade, Mackenzie Noelle, Mackenzie Paige.

Lindsey Brianne, Lindsey Brielle, Lindsey Catherine, Lindsey Caitlin, Lindsey Corinne, Lindsey Christina, Lindsey Danielle, Lindsey Dawn, Lindsey Janelle, Lindsey Joelle, Lindsey Jade, Lindsey Kathleen, Lindsey Kristin, Lindsey Michelle, Lindsey Maureen, Lindsey Nicole, Lindsey Noelle, Lindsey Paige.

boys

I like Garrett the best of your choices: Garrett Andrew, Garrett Benjamin, Garrett Christopher, Garrett Joseph, Garrett Lucas, Garrett Matthew, Garrett Michael, Garrett Marcus, Garrett Nicholas (another of your choices), Garrett Nathaniel, Garrett Preston, Garrett Parker, Garrett Scott, Garrett Spencer, Garrett William.

Dakota is a tough one. I really don't like it, it can be unisex. I guess I'd go with something that's not as trendy - Dakota Matthew, Michael, Nicholas, William.

Blaine should have something longer: Blaine Christopher, Blaine Alexander, some of the shorter ones would work: Matthew, Michael, William.

I have never known anyone named Nicholas with the nn Cole. I like Nicholas OK, do not like Cole. some of the middles I've suggested for the others would work with Nicholas or Cole.

good luck

Wow! I didn't know that. . .I think we can mark that one off our list! I would hate for my child to find out that his name means "the groin!" What would he think of his parents! LOL!

Thanks!

Hi, Karen.

Congratulations! You've done the hard part---making the "short" list of faves! Now, all you have to do is have a baby. LOL

First, I am compelled to encourage you to consider a name with special significance for the mn. Children really like to have story behind their name. With my children, we did first names we really liked and mn after family.

I can understand if you don't want to play favorites among families/family members. If there isn't a family name you want to use, how about a favorite book/movie character, a favorite place, or simply a mn that has a great meaning?

I highly discourage "filler" mn; I think kids need the boost of confidence that comes with knowing at least part of their name was selected with special care and signficance.
That's just my .02 opinion, and after saying all that, here are some "filler" mn I like with your selections- (one thing that might help you choose a mn is to go by the rule of thumb to vary the number of syllables from the fn to the mn)

Audrey ? A. (personal fav.)--- Audrey is lovely. It may very well pass Mackenzie in the overuse category over the next 3-5 years. Anyway, it's a recognizable, feminine name that grows up well with a girl. MN- Audrey Lauren A., Audrey Elizabeth A., Audrey Michaela A., Audrey Hope A., Audrey Lynn A. --- *Important* - Audrey has a great meaning- noble strength- Some mn with great meanings- Audrey Caitlin A. (pure, innocent), Audrey Charlotte A. (little lady of noble strength - WOW!), Audrey Rebecca A. (servant of God), Audrey Megan A. (pearl), Audrey Mia A. (my noble strength), or after you- Audrey Kara (dear one of noble strength), Audrey Karenna

Mackenzie ? A. (though I feel it's been overused, dh's favorite)--- If you feel it's overused, what about the similar Mackenna?--- Mackenzie means son of the wise ruler...filler mn- Mackenzie Grace, Rose, Leigh, Faith, Paige--- MN with great meanings- Mackenzie Amelia A. (industrious), Mackenzie Bridget A.(strong woman), Mackenzie Renee (peaceful), Mackenzie Arden A. (burning with enthusiasm), Mackenzie Karen A. (pure)

Lindsey ? A. The popularity of Lindsey settled out 10 years ago. It's now a good, solid choice, IMO. I prefer the original spelling- Lindsay, esp. for a girl. It means "island of the linden trees."--- filler names- Lindsay Brooke, Lindsay Anne, Lindsay Leigh, Lindsay Ashlynn, Lindsay Rae, Lindsay Marie--- with great meanings- Lindsay Claire (bright and shining), Lindsay Nichole (victorious, Lindsay Miranda (beautiful and admirable), Lindsay Kara A. (pure, and after you)

Our Favorite Boys Names:

Garrett ? A. --- I like Garrett a lot. Recognizable, easy to spell, strong, now wildly popular. It means brave with the spear.
Filler names- Garrett Michael, Garrett Zane, Garrett Austin, maybe even Garrett Dakota to satisfy dh or Garrett Cole since it's another name you like --- with great meanings- Garrett Matthew (gift of God), Garrett Asher (happy, joyous), Garrett Oliver (kind, affectionate)

Dakota ? A. (dh's favorite)---I love the meaning- my ally and/or forever smiling.
filler- Dakota Jackson, Dakota Brice, Dakota Kenneth, Dakota Jacob or Dakota Garrett--- with great meanings- Dakota Luke (healer), Dakota Grant (great), Dakota Ames (friend to all)

Blaine ? A.--- This is a good one. Grows up well! fillers- Blaine Avery, Blaine Christopher, Blaine Philip, Blaine Michael, Blaine Nicholas, Blaine Dakota
with great meanings- Blaine Alexander (defender of mankind), Blaine Eric (leader among men), Blaine Asher (happy, joyous), Blaine Adam (manly)

Cole ? A. (not sure if we'll use Nicolas as a fn or just Cole, dh doesn't like nn's so it will prob be Cole)--- filler- Cole Garrett, Cole Bryson, Cole Michael, Cole Derreck, Cole Hunter, Cole Dylan, Cole Thomas, Cole Jackson, Cole Trenton --- with great meanings- Cole Matthew (gift of God), Cole Timothy (gift of God), Cole Andrew (manly), Cole Damian (spirited), Cole Gabriel (hero of God), Cole Reuben (behold, a son!)

Keep us updated! Keep dreaming, Ginger

Blaine doesn't mean "the groin"! It's from a surname meaning "Servant of Blaan" Blaan, otherwise known as Blane can be found here: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=567

Don't write it off!

I was curious and I checked the meaning of Blaine out after I posted that we'd write it off, because I was really disapointed. . .I like that name a lot and it was one of the few that dh and I agreed on! The meaning that I found was start of a river. . . which sounds much better than "the groin!" My mind was eased, but your post makes me feel better too!

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone that posted . . .we're searching for family middle names, but trying to do it discretely - we don't want our mom's getting too excited! (Not that they aren't already - and our grandmothers too! LOL!)I appreciate all the help - and I am glad to do the same for any one that asks!

Good luck to all - see you around the boards!
