Deirdre - what do you think, my husband loves it, he is insisting, he is very into celtic mythology. Dayr-dra is the pronounciation.
I think this name is way, way too common, the first thing that pops to mind is an old slightly senile woman, what do you think?
I'm not sure how this name comes across. I've tried explaining he's just in love with a story.

I like the name, but the pronouciation "deer-dree" is more flattering.

I agree with Audra's pronunciation.

I think it's very pretty. There are three different pronunciations for it: DER-dra, DEER-dra, and DEER-DREE. I personally like DEER-dra the best. It is rarely used on babies at the moment, and the highest it ever got in popularity in the last century or so is somewhere in the 300's or something like that in the 60's. So, no, it's not too common at all. It's a great name. But, if you don't like it, then you shouldn't feel pressed to use it.

I live in the Boston area, so there are lots of Deirdres, but most are over 30. It's never been my fave of the Irish names. (I've only heard it prounced Dear-dra around here - - or should I say "De-ah-dra" with the Boston accent!) If you don't like it, then that's a deal-breaker. I would put it in the middle name spot (how often will it ever come up? ;-)) and find something else you both love.

I would say it Dear-dra as well. Not a horrible name, and not that popular--at least I know of none!

Best of luck!

I like the name Dierdre (pronounced "Deer - dra"). It is definitely not common. She'd surely be the only Dierdre in her class. It's a lovely name.

Adding "no offense" to something hurtful doesn't make it any less so, btw.

I think Deirdre is fresh and pretty. Dayr-dra or Dear-dra, either way.

Good luck! :-)

The Deirdre's I know are in their 20's (and pretty), but it is not at all common with any age group in my area. I think it is a nice name!
