DH grrrr...

There is nothing wrong with giving your kid a nickname or shortening a name, if that is what you want to do. But DH shortens EVERYTHING I suggest! Grr... It's driving me nuts! I have a "real" name and then my name that I go by, so I don't want to do the nickname thing because as I got older I didn't like having to do the whole nickname and "real" name thing. I'm sure this should be in the rant section but hey, I clicked here....

*JUST A NOTE: I'M NOT ASKING FOR OPINIONS ON THESE NAMES, THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF WHY I'M RANTING ABOUT DH*

Aubrianna--he likes Aubri better.

Annabelle--he likes Anna.

Alexandria--he likes Alex.

-OR- if I suggest a name for a girl (we don't know the sex, and we've picked a boy's name but can't decide on a girl's name) he likes it better for a boy--and sometimes it doesn't make sense!!!

examples:

Paisley--DH likes it better for a boy.

Ainsley--again, boy.

Charlie--I wanted to spell it Charleigh, but nope.

Anyone else got this problem?!

Oh yes I am hearing you loud and clear. Every name I suggest he says something smart about it or possible nn's he will get. I liked the name Mason for our 2nd ds and he refused to have it b/c he said he would get called masonite (as if). He has named all of our children b/c I just give up. He will not agree to anything I say.

I know what you mean. My DH can be very difficult when it comes to naming. With him, he always has some association with the name. "No, not that, that's a geeky name." Or more specifically, "That sounds like the name of an uptight librarian with her glasses perched on the end of her nose shushing all the kids." Ugh! :-P

One thing I've noticed with men is that they prefer very short, 1-2 syllable names. My friend's DH wouldn't even really consider any boy name longer than one syllable -- Luke, Max, Paul, etc. If she suggested a longer name, he found a way to shorten it to one syllable.

I see on your list that your girl names are pretty long -- 3,4,5 syllables. Are there any shorter names that you like (that aren't unisex since he clearly doesn't like those)?

Another idea... what about letting him have his special nn for your child, but having everyone else use the full name? I think a lot of daddies/grandpas like to have their own special nicknames, esp. for girls. Our neighbor calls his granddaughter Rosie b/c her mn is Rose, and I think it's very sweet. (Everyone else calls her by her first name.)

Sorry if you were just ranting and not looking for suggestions. I really do feel your pain. It took us almost the entire pregnancy to find a name for DD#2, and that was the *only* name we could agree on. It was so frustrating! Thankfully, we already agree on a couple names this time, so it's going much better. :-)

My dh doesn’t believe that our children need a “real name.” He just wants to name them all nn’s. It drives me mad! Anytime he comes up with a cute nnish name I suggest a full name to accompany it. He shoots them down and says he likes his idea better. I am absolutely fine with him calling our child by a nn but feel they need a “real” name. I really don’t even care if he ever says her “real” name. Crappy part is that most of his nn suggestions don’t have a cute full name to fit them. Ugh. We are having a girl in April and he suggests all tom-boy names as well. Who knew picking a name for your baby was such a struggle?

Hello and congratulations on expecting.

I know you didn't really solicit opinions, but there is a solution that seems simple enough to me...

Why not "trick" him with a one syllable name that's not terribly prissy?

Hope
Paige
Faith
Brynn
Blair
Lane
Brooke
Jade
Clare
Elle
Cass
Tess
Sloane
Sage

They are feminine, but tailored, and I'm coming up blank on how he could shorten them...

Even something like-

Mia
Leah
Bridget
Dana
Carly

Also, regarding Ainsley- the very similar Ansley has been used a few times here. Maybe he would think that's a more girlish compromise?

I've been there! In the end, you'll be surprised that you WILL find a name you both love.
Best wishes, Ginger
