We are having a boy and have narrowed our choices to Diego, Isaac and Gabriel (mn Richard). I like them all but I really like Diego best (it's Dh's favorite as well) BUT I am concernaed about how ethnic it sounds. We are not hispanic/spanish (I'm a red headed noweigian and DH is 1/2 French/part chinese), what do you all think? Our last name is french, so Diego sounds good with it but.... be honest Also our other 2 kids are Ella and McKenna. TIA!!

I think Diego's been around long enough that it'll be fine. It's familiar to even non Spanish speakers and I doubt anyone'll have problems with it. Diego's great! (I think it sounds fine with my incredibly Scottish last name too)

ETA: Diego sounds fine with Ella & McKenna! There's no law that says kids have to match, sound alike or in any way be alike, thank goodness!

well, it certainly is very known as Spanish/Hispanic, it might seem a little strange. I don't see the name Diego becoming mainstream like some of the Irish names have become.

if you and hubby both like it, I'd say go for it. people will get used to that being his name and the ethnic thing will fade away in time.

good luck

I really do like Diego. But I would not use it if there were no hispanic heritage in the family. But that's just me.

If you're looking for first impressions, as I assume you are, then here's mine: it reminds me of the saber-toothed tiger character in Ice Age. Now, granted, that's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen--I loved it, and I've seen it probably 10 times. However, would I name my son after one of the characters...uh, no.

Quite honestly, the name is not my favorite. It sounds sort of strange nestled beside "Richard" and a French last name, but that's just me. Lots of people responded VERY negatively when I posted my favorites. If you love it, then go for it.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the name Isaac, and I really wish you'd use it instead!

I personally don't care for the name Diego...I just don't think it goes well with Ella & McKenna. That said, I prefer Isaac Richard - AND seeing as how I know a guy named Diego, who is Hispanic, it does seem a bit ethnic to me. Just my opinion though! Good luck!
