Dillon/Dillyn as a girls name...

I'm currently 2 months pregnant. If we're having a boy, we have decided on the name Aiden Michael Byrd... For a girl, I like the name Dillon/Dillyn Marie Byrd- but my mother and grandmother, and my husband's mother think it's "too masculine". Also- If I stick with this name, I can't decide if I want to spell it Dillon or Dillyn...

My mother's middle name Lynn, was part of my inspiration for this name, so your suggestion of spelling it "Dilynn" is an excellent one. I had thought of this already, and wasn't sure I liked it, but had never seen it written out. My only concern was that it might confuse prounounciation, but it seems that it would be alright to me. Thank you so much for your iput. =)

Hi, Lacey.

First of all, congrats on expecting. I wish you the best of luck.

I've been a collector of names most of my life. For years, I was stuck on-

Dylan Kate as a double name

I didn't use it after all, but I did select very unusual names for my children, including a very strong surname for my daughter.
You can expect a lot of negative comments; however, every once in a while, someone will come along and really "gush" over your name choice. Those positive comments go a long way!
I don't regret using unusual names for my kids. Since your own name was unusual growing up, you can also appreciate the value of an unusual name.

My kids are now 8 & 10 and REALLY like their uniqueness.

As far as the comments that it's a boy's name, I understand when someone likes traditional names, they don't want parents to "take" any more boy names to the girl side. However, Dillon is actually a surname which is acceptable either way.

Also, I don't see any protesting on behalf of - Lindsay, Courtney, Ashley, Meredith, Mallory, Casey, and the list goes on and on. Irish names are particular vulnerable to cross over, it seems (like Dylan AND Conner, Logan, Casey, etc.)

The one problem I do have is the Dillyn spelling. I understand your reasoning, and I'm tempted now that I've learned it's after your mother, but no matter what "we" *smile* think, to the population in general, it just looks -KRE8TYV, you know what I mean?
And, face it, she will be constantly, not only correcting the male/female issue- but also having to spell it.

So I say use it, if you like it, but maybe consider a traditional spelling.
Or if you can live with (and expect her to live with) constant corrections, spell it however you like. But do this- put yourself in Dillyn's shoes for a moment- think about going through life with "a boy's name, that seems spelled incorrectly to most people" and decide if being named after her grandmother will be worth it...

After saying all that, keep in mind that I do like Dylan A LOT, for a girl.
One other consideration- Dylan/Dillon/Dillyn Marie as a double name, like my old fave Dylan Kate- That helps keep her gender in perspective.

A side note- Aiden Michael is a great name! I'm the world's greatest fan of Michael as a middle name!

Take care and enjoy the naming quest! Sincerely, Ginger

I think Dillyn/Dillon is too masculine for a girl- but if you like it- that's all that matters. But if you use it I like Dillyn!

I love masculin names for girls. I think when she's an adult she'll love it.
Dylan is how I'd spell it, but I also love Charlie and James for a girl.

I know you're leaning towards Dylan (of the two I would definitely choose this spelling, despite the association with your mum, which I do appreciate), but I actually like Delila/Delilah. It may not be your style, but I just thought I'd put in my $0.02. :)

I actually love that name for a girl. If I were to name my baby girl that... I would either spell it Dillian or Dylan. I actually heard of that name from the Good Morning Miami, which wasn't on the air for very long.

Good luck!
