SO seems to only like surnames as first names, and I'm warming to the idea. Are there any that you like?

I may not be of any help, as I prefer surnames that actually belong somewhere in the family tree of the person using it. It sounds silly to me for someone to use a surname that they just pulled out of the air.

That said, however, there are some names that are commonly used as FN that have a surname feel that I don't have any problem with, such as Miles, Patterson, Jackson, Preston, Quincy, Parker, Connor, etc.

I do like some surnames on boys but very few on girls. My favored surnames for boys are family surnames, but I do have a few that I favor just for sound:

Boys:
Elliott
Ford
Fortunato
Harrison
Hilary
Hollis
Lennox
Levi
Maynard
Meriwether
Miles
Nash
Pascal
Paxton
Rafferty
Severin
Spencer
Sterling
Tolliver
Truman
Warren
Wesley
Willoughby

Girls:

My daughter's middle name is her Great Grandmother's first name but I did a google search for it before she was born and found out it's also a surname. Rosamel. I also love Romilly.

I like a few surnames as first names - but some of the names are way overused in my area.

A few I like:

Carter (family name)
Jordan
Morgan
Reed
Donovan
Mitchell

I personally only like surnames as first names when the name is a family name in your family, or if the name has some other very personal meaning. That is only my opinion, though. I know a lot of people like choosing random surnames as first names.

I'm sometimes surprised at the names that turn out to also be surnames. Of my and DH's FN, MN and LN (before we were married), 5 of the 6 are also LN.

Jordan
Ryan
Scott
Franklin
and our current LN, of course

Others include

Malcolm (a variation on our LN)
Ross (my FIL)
Blair
Carroll (Carol)
Washington
Morris
Madison
Wilson
Sherman
Jefferson
Carter
Benjamin (my dad)
Michael
Thomas
Tons and tons of Mc and Mac names

There was even a signer of the Constitution who was a Mr. Jennifer!

One good source I've seen for surnames as FN is the book I'm sure we've all seen advertised on iVillage, the Baby Name Wizard. One of its many, many name lists is "Last Names First"
