Do you consider the meaning of the name
| Sun, 02-19-2006 - 7:07pm |
when thinking of names. I really like the name Mallory and looked up it's meaning........Bad Omen. It's one thing for my name to mean "Irish Girl" it's another thing for a person's name to mean bad omen. Would that stop you from using the name?

Funny to see this post.....you aren't the only one to post about this topic, and someone else has even posted about this name. I, myself, have even posted about name meanings recently. (The name Cameron, means crooked/bent nose, would you use it?)
I personally like the name Mallory a lot. The meaning really stinks though, so I see your concern. Most girls, at one point or another, look up what their name means. (didn't you as a kid/teen?) I guess you have to think how she would feel reading that name meaning. But on the other hand, how important REALLY is the name meaning???
I suppose I am no help at all. I don't know what I would do, but I think with the meaning of Bad Omen, that I may pass this name by. (Now if we can only decide about our possible use of Cameron....)

I found an alternate meaning for Mallory, "mailed," which I'm assuming means "armored." Still not the best meaning, but better than "bad omen," perhaps? I don't necessarily let meanings influence my liking of names, but if you're worried about how little Mallory will feel when she looks up her name's meaning, it would be good to have a story to tell her about how special the name Mallory is to *you,* i.e. it's a family name, or it's your favorite character in a book, something like that to offset the negative meaning.

I just asked dh if he knew what his name was and he did (I even looked it up). Like I said, my name means Irish Girl, nothing too exciting there. I like that there is an alternate form of the meaning as far as "mailed" goes. I just really like the name. My nephew's name means "Barrel maker".
I guess I would really need to weigh the good with the bad. If my name was Mallory I think I could get over it. It's not like I'm always saying............"My name is Colleen, it means Irish girl"
