oh, no, I didn't think you sounded defensive at all! :-) I was just hoping *I* hadn't sounded snarky... and I don't like to sound like I'm trying to bash other people's styles... one thing I've learned is that people have so many different naming styles...

Years ago I worked with a man who went by Speedy as a nn because he was so fast when he was a baby. His real name was Plato. I think I like Speedy better.

Remember its a drug, not a good name to send your kid off to school with. He will undoubtably get teased.

I'm sorry, but while I could see this as an acquired nn, I can't see it as a given name at all. As already mentioned, it's just a word (and FWIW, I dislike Chase and other such "names" for the same reason) and has the drug association. Also, although I'm not sure quite how to phrase this, Speed (or Speedy) wouldn't be the most flattering name for a grown man, if you get my point. I'm sure we've all heard of men called "Speedy" or "Minute Man" or similar nns, so hopefully I don't have to come right out and say it, but he might not appreciate being stuck with it. ;)

I do like McCartney, especially if it holds any special meaning for you, but not as a fn with McKinna (unless of course the parents or other close family are really Kinna and Cartney or some variation, but it's still extremely matchy).

Love the suggestion of Dashiel(l), nn Dash, btw! Great, underused name, and the obvious nn Dash seems perfect. ;)

Speed as a name? seriously you must be joking - he'll either get Speedo jokes or those of us who lived thru the 70s will think of amphetamines which were called "speed" and used as "uppers"

Was "Speedy" the given name on his birth and baptismal certificate, or his nickname? I had friends with cool nicknames, but their given names were names like Michael. That might have been a nickname.
