Do you think Fiona is going to rise???

Do you think the name Fiona is going to gain increasing popularity over the next few years? I never recalled hearing it before (except Fiona Apple), but recently I've met one child with the name and now a celebrity (Jennie Garth) just named her daughter Fiona, which I have a feeling may propel the name even more.

Fiona was our second choice next to Lorelei. I'm probably safer with Lorelei if popularity is an issue, but I still really like Fiona. Do you think it is going to rise significantly enough to be a concern? Your thoughts on the subject?

Yes, Fiona is simultaneously being "discovered" by a lot of parents. It will continue to rise. You would be on the early side of it if you used it now, but I think there is a good chance this name will move into the Top 50 within 4 years. I think it has that Isabella/Sophia ring to it where it sounds exotic and elegant but NOT so far out there that it's impractical. That's an explosive combination, right now, in terms of popularity. I wouldn't be surprised if Fiona peaked out in the 40-50 range OR if we see it at no. 10-15 before it peaks.

Lovely, lovely name.

I don't think it will hit the top ten or anything, but it will definitely become more familiar. The Shrek movies may keep some parents away (which is good for you LOL) -- I know that's one of the reasons Jason didn't like it for a mn, thus leading us to Fiora -- so that might help keep it from rising too high. I still love it. ;)

Absolutely. I don't think it's going to be top 10, but I definitely think it could reach top 50. I love it, but I scratched it off my list (at least for now) because I am expecting a big jump in the next few years.

Yes, I think Fiona is rising because we hear more and more about it. Although it is still new enough that people find it original. My thoughts are, it might well be part of the top 100 most popular names within a few years... well, who knows! If you love it, just go for it!

Fiona is actually my niece's name. She was born in March this year.

If it makes you feel any better, it actually dropped in popularity from 2004 to 2005. It went from 327 to 378 out of the top 1000 girls names.

The Shrek thing might be keeping a lot of parents away. My sister almost didnt go for it b/c of that even though she loves the name. Its her biggest pet peeve when people are like, "Ohhh, Fiona! From Shrek right?" Her response is always, "Yeah, I named my daughter after a cartoon character. Her name has nothing to do with mine and my husband's Irish heritage." *eye roll* lol. People can be dumb.

Fiona was also on BabyZone's list of the 10 "Coolest Girls' Names" for 2006.

That's the only thing that irritates me when I mention our choice of Lorelei to anyone. The first thing people say is, "oh, like the Gilmore Girls." Yes, I want to name my child after a television character. It has nothing to do with my heritage or the fact that it's a beautiful name. I guess I'd better get used to the reference, though. It seems like that's the only thing people think of when they hear it.

I know, its aggravating. I mean I watch Gilmore Girls, so when I hear the name Lorelei of course I think of the show (same with Rory), but I would never assume someone named their child based on the show, or even got the name from the show. And I certainly wouldnt insult someone by taking a name she and her dh probably labored over for months and say something stupid like, "Lorelei? Like from the tv show, right". Gah!!

When my sister was first thinking about Fiona she didnt even know that was a character's name in Shrek! She'd never seen either movie and it wasnt until after she was pretty committed to the name that she found out about the reference. She was so pissed!

I was looking at a local hospital's online nursery (where I saw all the crazy names in the "Must've been a full moon" post) and I was looking for Fiona.
