Does "Maggie" need a full name?

DH and I are considering the name Maggie, but we aren't really crazy about Margaret. Do you think it's okay to just have the full name be Maggie? Or is there maybe another name who's nickname is Maggie?

Thanks!

Yes, I most definitely recommend a more formal given name. Every adult I've met who has a nickname as their given name, has expressed that they wished their parents had given them the more formal given name.

Names for which Maggie can be a nickname:
Margaret
Marguerite
Magnolia
Margarita
Margaux
Margot
Margret
Marjory
Majeda
Magdalena
Magdalene

I do find Maggie very nicknamey. I like Margaret, but if you don't, don't use it. You could also consider Megan, Meagan, or Magdelena.

I strongly believe that Maggie should be a nn to a full name.

I know a few people named Maggie as their full, given name

I dislike Margaret, always have, so I'd never suggest that (to me, this one screams old-fashioned, not classic, that's just me though)

one other thought is Magdalene, not that I like that much either

good luck

I agree that it's better to give her a more formal name and use Maggie as a nn.

If you like the name Maggie and that is what you will call her anyway, then by all means name her Maggie. I really don't see the point in naming a child one name with the intention of calling her another name. Seems silly. Name her what you want her to be called that way there is no confusion.

I have to agree with most of the other replies -- Maggie is a sweet, adorable nn for a little girl, but I'd give her a more adult option (since she WILL grow up). ;)

Despite the previous poster's opinion that you should just name her what you plan on calling her, and avoid any "confusion" (who's confused, btw? LOL), it's always nice to look ahead to your child's future and realize that they may one day WANT a more formal option, whether for professional/business purposes or even simply to have a choice in the matter, should they feel having a pet form as a given name is too juvenile. It never hurts to have an option, but you'll find many with nns as their given names find it to be a burden -- an annoyance at best: always being asked what it's "short for," constantly getting mail and even more official documents (driver's license, credit cards, passports, etc. "corrected" to reflect the full name you decided not to use LOL), things of that nature.

Besides Margaret, any of these could be used as formal names with Maggie (some were mentioned, sorry for repeats ):

Megan
Margery
Margot
Magdala
Magdalene
Magdalena
Magda
Magali
Magdolna
Madeline (all forms stem from Magdalene)
Madeleine
Madelaine
Madelina
Madalena
Marla
Morrigan
Morgan
Morgana
Morgaine/Morgane
Magnolia
Marigold
Imogen
Imogene

Even a double name or fn/mn combo could obviously yield the nn Maggie. Mary Gwyneth or Maura Genevieve, for example.

I agree with the post about naming your child what you want her to be called. I understand where you are coming from. I have many names that may sound like nicknames, but it is because I don't like the formal names. I like Maggie much better than Margaret or any other name that could be turned into Maggie. I feel like I've made this same comment many times before. I don't feel that naming a child Maggie or any other nicknamey name will keep them behind in the professional world. If a business executive sees the name Maggie, he may ask if that is her full name or not, but when she says yes, they are definately not going to hold it against her and not hire her because of the name her parents gave her. I say if you love it, go for it. The worst thing to do is to settle for a name you don't like just so that you can have the nickname Maggie. I feel that it stands on its own.

Hi,
I am the person who posted "nicknames?" wondering if Lainey and Leo could be given names. I love Lainey but not any longer formal names. There are a few people on this board who are blatantly rude and just mean about "nicknamey" names. I think that if you love Maggie but not any longer formal names for Maggie, then you should name her what you love...Maggie. Good Luck.

Maggie is a nn to me, and needs a full name. Ideas:

Magdalena
Megan (Meggie is cute too)
