Does the meaning matter?

What is the feeling out there on the meaning of the name? DH loves Mallory, but that means "unlucky." I like the name, but worry about the meaning. I looked up the meaning of my name as a child, do kids do that or was I just weird?

This has always been my hang-up with this particular name.
The only thing I know to say is---
people are constantly using
Cameron- crooked nose
Brendan, Branden- stinking hair
Grayson/Gracen- gray-haired son
Conner- con man
etc. ---
I understand your hesitation. At the same time, Mallory is in the Top 250 girl names right now. SO, either, other parents didn't check the meaning OR decided it was unimportant.
*Maybe you could offset it with a mn with a great meaning...or if she does look up the meaning later, you can respond- It was more important to use the name b/c Daddy loved it---that will go a LONG way with a girl.
Best wishes, Ginger

It's nms, but if it's the name you and your dh really like, I wouldn't worry about it. After all, as the pp mentioned, the name Cameron is quite popular despite its potentially negative meaning. At least you're "lucky" to have an alternate, but equally valid, meaning to use. Just tell her (and anyone else) that it's a German name meaning army counselor (much like Brandon/Brendon is sometimes listed as meaning "stinking hair," but just as often carries the meaning of beacon hill/valley - a place name - or little raven, consecutively).

Ps. Had to laugh at Conner = con man ;)

I would love to tell you that the name meaning mean absolutely nothing, but it does---but ONLY when the meaning is not a good one. As with the previous posts, some names mean weird things. Perfect example is Brendan--my oldest son's name--and I have heard since having him, that the name can mean stinky hair. Never knew that before I had him since everywhere I looked it meant "raven" or "little prince". For our third son, I was so inlove with Cameron, but DH could not get over the "crooked nose" meaning, so we could not use it.
But Mallory is such a pretty name and its such a pity that the meaning is not a good one. I LOVE the name Brendan and think I would have used it, even if I knew that some people think it means stinky hair.......so I guess what I am trying to say is this: If you really love the name, go with it. In the reality of things, does what a name mean reflect anything on our children?? Use it if you love it.
