Don or Dawn question....

I'm not planning to use this name. I just wanted to know what others thought. I love the name Dawn, it was my Mom's middle name but I have known older men whose names are Don. To you, is it a girl or boys name? Does it depend on the spelling? I seem to learn more toward it being a female name if the spelling is Dawn but then again, like I said, I have met men named Don and didn't think twice. Just wondering....

I tend to view it as either depending on the spelling. I have an uncle named Donald who goes by "Don," and I also have a female cousin named "Dawn." Of the two, I think I prefer it more on a girl but only if it is spelled like the feminine variant.

I have a female cousin named Dawn, and all the men named Don that I have known are actually Donalds; Don is generally a nn. I think Dawn is lovely, but if the homophonic thing bothers you, you could use Aurora. It has the same meaning as Dawn, but with a slightly more "sophisticated" feel.

Anyway, when people are introduced to her, I sincerely doubt they would think her name is "Don" when it's "Dawn."

My mn is Dawn ... another alternative (other than Aurora, as mentioned) is Dagny, a name I personally love.

If this baby I'm having is a girl, she'll probably be either Eliza Dawn or Dagny Annette.

I definitely think it goes either way, depending on spelling!

I think there are probably regional differences, but I don't pronounce the two names the same.

Dawn is feminine, Don is masculine and they don't sound exactly alike to me. Like someone said, Dawn has an "awe" sound and Don has an "ah" sound. Interestingly enough, SIL and her sister are Dawn and Donna.

To me, these names do not sound similar. Dawn (both where I live now and also where I grew up, i.e., in a totally different part of the country) is pronounced with the -aw- like in saw. Don, on the other hand, is pronounced DAHN. So seeing as they come from different origins, are spelled differently, and are pronounced differently, I see them as much more different than similar.

Yeah, here in Oklahoma we say them both the same, too.

Dawn & Don are two entirely different names.

This idea -- of two different pronunciations for Don/Dawn -- is funny to me, having had the middle name Dawn all my life. To me, "fawn" and "con" rhyme, lol. I'd never heard there were two different pronunciations, and I'm still not getting the different between the two. Fawn and con sound exactly alike to me. Is the "w" more pronounced in Dawn, is that what you're saying? Just trying to "get" it!

All the same, I guess -- my mn is Dawn, rhyming with don/con/shawn/lawn/gone/ron ....
