I love nn's. My name is Nicole, but I am called Nikki 100% of the time, and that is NOT what I want for my kids. I will give them names with obvious nn's, but they will go by their full names on records, school attendance, etc. When choosing names, it is a high prioroty on my list for the names to have nn's. Some that I love right now are Tabitha nn Tabby, Adeline nn Addie, Charles nn Charlie, and Alexander nn Anders.

I didn't vote because there wasn't an option that fit for me.

I'm not planning a sactioned nickname. (ie I'm not planning to use a specific nickname) But I will be fine with other people shortening their names or using a nickname. And if a nickname evolves naturally and they wind up using that the bulk of the time, that's fine with me. I can't imagine they will use a nickname 100% of the time since I am disinclined to use nicknames and will very likely use their full name most of the time. But I am not OPPOSED to nicknames.

DS#1 - no one calls him by a nn
DS#2 - some people, including us, sometimes call him by a nn & sometimes not
DS#3 - no one calls him by a nn
DS#4 - has a name that can't be "nicknamed"

I prefer to not use or hear nns on my kids but ds#2 has a name that's easily nn'ed so even we do use it at times.

I'm from the school of "just name a child what you want him to be called =)"

DD--no nn unless you count my uncles calling her "Antannae"

DS--sometimes Park around the house

DS--NO

DS--NO

I voted "Yes, I love nicknames," but not all of my children's were intentional.

Kaitlyn -- we knew she might one day prefer to be called Kate, Katie, Kat or even Lyn(n), but we didn't plan on using any unless and until one developed. Over the last year or so, she's been called simply Kate about half the time (both because she likes the "grown-up" option and because our now-two-year-old couldn't say her full name until recently).

Devanie -- we kind of did the same thing here. We did consider any possible nns before choosing the name, especially since it's not that common/familiar, so we wanted her to have options as she matured. She ended up nicknaming herself this past year, referring to herself as "Evie" in her attempts to say Devanie.

Abigail -- the only "planned" nn. Since Abigail -- and even "Abby" as a given name -- is so popular, the only way we felt comfortable with it was to use an alternate nn, and we chose Aila (which was also on our long list and can basically be taken from the end of Abigail). That way, rather than being Abigail/Abby M. all through school, she can choose to go by simply Aila. ;)

If we have any more children, we would most likely use a nn for them as well (not because I feel we have to, but because many of the names I love have nns I love as well ).

It's funny -- I LOVE nicknames, and love trying to come up with original nns, like from the end of a name rather than the beginning or whatever else. But for my own future children, the names I love most are short and can't really be nicknamed. I guess I'll see how it actually works out when I have kids.

Of all the names I've picked for future children, only with one of them did I start with a nn and find a formal name for it (August for Gus, to honor great-grandfather Gustave). For the rest, my DH and I picked the names we liked and then tried to figure out what potential nns they'd have.

So far, we have one child, Hazel Dawn. NN = Hazy ^_^

1st ds Christopher. Went by full name until first grade (it was too long to write LOL) when he asked to go by Chris. Up until that time we only called him by his full name or silly nn that just we used.

2nd ds Andrew 11, we planned to call Drew but has only been called by his full name and silly nn by us.

3rd dd Emily. We didn't think it had a nn but right from the start called her Emmy or Em at home. Everyone else calls her by her full name.

My daughter is 8, and she has several nicknames. Most of them have nothing to do with her name though...usually I call her weasle. I tell her that she can weasle her way into anyone's heart. Her dad can call out the word "butthead" and she always says "what"? It's funny. I plan on giving our new baby nicknames too. We don't know the gender yet, but I already refer to him/her as Junior.
