I love nicknames, especially for girl names. I just think it gives options for more casual and formal use. It also gives the child options to redefine himself or herself without really changing the name.
I have one friend who always went by her mn in high school and decided in college that she wanted to go by her first name instead. My SIL now goes by Jennifer rather than Jenny. As for me, I always introduce myself as Stephanie, but most of my close friends call me Steph. It definitely rubs me the wrong way when someone I've just met takes it upon themselves to call me Steph.
My older DD is Megan, and we call her Meg a lot, but we always introduce her as Megan. DH loves the nn Meg, and that was one of the reasons he liked the name so much. My younger DD is Julianna, nn Annie. We definitely call her Annie more than Julianna, and she calls herself Annie. Of course, she's only two, so she can't really say Julianna yet. ;-) We do use Julianna quite a bit, though, and I like that she has options as she gets older.

I think you should distinguish between nicknames that everybody uses and pet names that are special between you asnd your child.

Mama to Claire
I'm not big on nicknames, with that being said,

I set up this poll because I felt that there is often quite a lot of discussion around nns and thought it'd be interesting to see the results.
I am very divided, as I like nns a lot, but also agree with naming a child what you'll be calling them (in some cases).
I don't have children yet, but some that I like can have nns which is something I want.
For example, I like Matthew (Matt), William (Will) and Christopher (Kit) though I wouldn't want to name my children Matt, Will and Kit. However, some names I like only as nn like Nate and Charlie and others can't be nn like Quinn and Ross.
I have a similar thing with girls names - I love nn for eg Elizabeth nn Libby is one of my favs, but I don't want to call her Libby only; same for Abigail nn Abby. Others I like can't be nn as easily like Erin and Fallon. Some I wouldn't want to nn like Gemma and Carolyn.
Anyway...very divided and I think I'd have to decide closer to the time, or just see what happens.
Interesting comments from others! Thanks for your input :o)

(no nn, though was called Elle and Elly by friends when younger, but didn't stick - and called Lainy by my sister Catherine (no nn ever) when she wants something!) :o)
