Election-Name crisis

My husband and I are expecting our second this summer. We have had Harper picked out for a girl since I was pregnant with my son (Rhett). I am Canadian and we elected a new Prime Minister last week and his name is Stephen Harper. Can I still use Harper or will everyone think I am a die-hard conservative naming my daughter after our leader? I guess not too many people had this problem in the US...Bush isn't the prettiest girls name.

I absolutely **love** the name Harper! I have a friend who's not quite 3 year old is named that and it is so unique.

I'm not a huge fan of the name Harper but I do think you should use it if you like it. It is something you have liked for years and it gives you a sort of 'grandfather clause' on why you are using it. Take me for example, I had always wanted to get married on my grandmother's birthday and when she passed away in 2001, it made it all the more important. Her birthday is September 11th and yes, it is now my wedding anniversary as well (September 11, 2004). Things will happen that are beyond your control. What if you decided to name her Jane instead and it turned out to be the name of a poor politician or worse yet, serial killer? You can't help that the name you choose just so happens to be that of our PM (there are lots of people with the names Campbell, Clark, Bennett & MacKenzie). If you really like the name, go for it!

I'm a fellow Canadian, I understand the problem! I don't think it would matter, though. But I do think that Harper doesn't have nearly as much style as Rhett does, and it doesn't sound like its the name for you. Rhett is so nice, and Harper just seems trendy next to it IMO. I don't think it would be a problem using it though after Stephen Harper's election.
