The name Eli for a boy, is it used only as a nickname, or can it be used as a name by itself?

It CAN be used on its own, but I think most people, myself included, prefer it as a nn. Here are some ideas of names it can be short for:
Elliott
Elias
Ellis
Elijah

To me, it's only a nn for Elias, Elijah or perhaps, Ellis.

Either! I have a friend who just had a boy a couple of months ago and his first name is Eli (not short for anything).

I agree with the PP. I know a person who just had a baby recently, and they named him Eli (not short for anything). I like the name a lot, and I think it stands alone perfectly fine.

I prefer Eli as a stand alone name actually. It has been in the top 200 most popular boy names now for several years, so it isn't too uncommon. I think Eli is very handsome!

Eli can definitely stand on its own. Look at my poll down under the boys section. A name on the top of my list, Eli Griffith. I love the name Eli but don't care for Elijah or Elias.

It's definitely a name on it's own (it's in the bible), but if you're asking for opinions I like it better as a nickname. It's actually a really cute nickname.

Eli can totally be a name on it's own. I think it is often a nickname, but is nice as a stand-alone name.
