Is Eliana too weird?
| Mon, 07-30-2007 - 12:49am |
We are expecting our baby girl any day now (due August 5)... my favorite name is still Eliana (nn Ellie), but my husband is pretty unsure about it since it is so unique. It's #242 on the Soc. Sec. Dept's ranking of names... I love the meaning: "God has answered us." However, my husband's favorite is still Samantha (Sam), but I'm not as excited about that one. What are your thoughts?
Our older daughter is Alexandra and we call her Alex... we'd like it to blend with that, but it's not our number 1 criteria to have a perfect match with her name.
THANK YOU to all who replied to my previous question from a few days ago... SO helpful!

THANK YOU for your response! Personally, I too love the name. However, because it is a little bit less-heard-of, I feel I really need my husband to be "on board" with the decision to use it. It's really helpful to know that you've gotten good responses to your daughter having the name... .is there ever any confusion about the pronunciation? Do people mistake it with Elaina? Do you call her Ellie? I believe we would use the nn Ellie. THANK YOU again, and please let me know your further thoughts.
The occasional person, reading the name, has gotten it wrong. but that seems to happen with pretty much any name. Most people, especially teachers and people who are around young children a lot, get it right because they have heard it before. (There is even another Eliana in her daycare class!) We do usually call her Ellie, but sometimes El. I like the flexibility to give her lots of nicknames. Ellie is a really popular nickname right now, so she was in a Gymboree class with one girl whose given name was Eli and another Elle and another that started with El, so I called her Eliana there. But I think that El- names are really popular and -iana names are pretty popular -Juliana, Liana, Marianna, Brianna, etc. So Eliana - to the younger generations - fits right in. Some older people dont get it. Like my neighbor, who is 94 just can't say it right no matter how hard he tries. I dont make a big deal out of it though because I know he isnt doing it on purpose and he means well.
I dont think I have had anyone have a negative reaction to it. Some people will say, 'oh that is different' and you know they are thinking it is strange. But the overwhelming majority of people say 'wow that is so pretty, where did you find that name?' or something similar. I was actually hoping it would be a little less used than I am finding it to be. I think it may be our area though. We live in an area with a fairly large Jewish population and Eliana has a Hebrew origin, so I think it is used more around here. Plus, we live in a pretty affluent area, and the higher income classes seem to be more on the 'cutting edge' with names. So I guess it sort of depends on where you live. I was hoping to find a name that was beautiful, not overused, and not 'weird'. I think I definitely found it!

THANKS for your reply~ it was so helpful of you.
I LOVE the name myself~ now I just have to convince my husband. He's a little more hesitant about it since it is less common.
Thank you again for your thoughts!!!!
