Is Ethan wimpy?

I've not had much luck budging my DH from Ethan to Alec (we have one boy-Jack). My worry on Ethan, aside from its popularity (though Jack is also uber-popular now - wasnt when I named him it) is is Ethan like a strong athletic masculine kind of name or is it bookish? Not to steer my kids into sterotypes, but I dont think any son of ours is going to avoid sports and I dont know what it is about Ethan that seems a little "delicate" to me. Maybe the "E"? Am I reading too much into it?

I think one of the side effects of popularity is that it's harder to stereotype those names.

So, are you saying that a male child can't be both athletic and bookish? Maybe it's just my group of friends, but most guys I know can speak intelligently about literature and politics, but are still the first ones to grab bats and gloves for their weekend games. I'm not certain where you're going with this, but I don't think that Ethan is a "delicate" name at all, nor do I think it'll be out of place on the much-revered high school football field.

I think it's a decent name &, personally, I can't even stereotype it ... it seems to fit a variety of personality types.

Whoa- please dont read that much into this. I'm in Mensa myself, my first son is gifted and if I get my way he'll go to Harvard and be a doctor. However, he is also going to be broad and tall (probably close to 7 feet tall literally) and he LOVES sports and Im guessing my second will be similar.

I DO believe there is a legitimate "feel" to names and I happen to like strong rugged names. That doesnt mean I want my kid to be an idiot. For example, does "Gertrude" bring about images of grace and beauty? Not to this current generation, no, and I want a boys name that reflect the all american boy/guy that I hope my kids grow up to be- both strong and smart. If it makes it easier for you, replace "bookish" with "geeky".

Ethan obviously has a "softer" feel, though I'm speaking of the sounds of the name itself, not the personality of the child. Jack has much sharper/harder sounds, if that's what you're getting at. As a previous post mentioned, however, it's much harder to stereotype the more popular names. Since so many different types of chidren have the same exact names, it's harder for those kids to be pigeon-holed. Hope that makes sense. ;)

I don't find it wimpy at all... in fact, I find it more athletic sounding than Jack!

For what it's worth... the name Ethan means strong and brave. If you're looking for another strong Ethan, think about Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible movies. Definitely not wimpy! Good luck!
