I read this name in a fiction novel, and wondered if anybody had ever heard a real person with it, i'm guessing its hebrew, like Uriel and Gabriel and Nathaniel, etc, but is it male or female? What do you think of it?

I've never heard of it, but Zohar/Zohara/Zohair, etc., is a Hebrew name meaning 'brilliance' or 'bright light', and -el is the suffix in Hebrew meaning 'God'. So a tentative translation would be 'light of God' or 'brilliance of God'. Whether it's a rare Hebrew name that has ever actually been used I cannot say; even though it does have meaning, it could have been coined by an author with some knowledge of the Hebrew language. Zohar is used as both a male and female name.
