Just wondering...So many people use a family name for a mn. How do you determine what name to use? I know that we cannot us a fn when we get pregnant b/c if we pick a name from his family my mother will flip and vice versa. My dh said he wants to do that but I just think its trouble waiting to happen.

my dh and i decided NOT to use family names at all. we knew one member of the family would be thrilled, but the rest would maybe be hurt we didn't use thier names. our dd's mn is claire and the 1st word out of my dad's mouth when we told them was "who did you get that name from...who is that after?". had to explain we just liked the name. (we didn't tell anyone our name choices until after she was born to keep it OUR choice).

My first child was named after no-one. My second will be named after someone in my DH's family, and my third will be named after someone in my family =)
#2 Girl: MN Blanche after my FIL
#2 Boy: First initial J and MN David after my DH's grandfather
#3 Girl: MN Elizabeth after me (my step"son" is named after my DH :)
#3 Boy: MN Patrick after my mother
~ Liz, mom to Christopher and Nicholas
Good idea...my mother or his mother would still gripe about why we didnt use thier side of the family

We started out by determining who the important men in our lives were in our families. Then, after we had chosen a 1st name, we determined which name (from both fns & mns) sounded best w/ the fn we chose for our baby.
-For our 1st son we used dh's mn which is also his father's mn & grandfather's fn.
-For our 2nd son we used my father's fn.
-For our 3rd son we used my grandfather's mn.
-For our 4th son we used the fn of a great-great grandfather of dh who fought & was injured in the Civil War. Just a neat story to explain to our son where his mn came from.
My DS's mn is after my father. I figure they are getting my DH's last name, I get 1st dibs on putting my family's name in there. My DD's mn is after my MIL who had recently died. If we have another boy the mn will be William which is convinently a name of both our grandfathers. If it is a girl, we are still working on it. I want it to be aftre someone we loved and had a relationship with, not a distant great aunt. Also it has to be a name we like and want to use.
I guess we are lucky in that I cannot see either family flipping out over nameing after one side and not the other. That seems a little childish to me.
DH and I have already agreed not to use any family names as we know that someone's feelings would be hurt. If we were to have a boy, it would be Evan Robert (Robert is my DH fn and he is not named after anyone) For a girl we like Rebecca and we are still at a loss for a mn. We are still TTC and have been for a bit so I know we have time to figure it all out.
