Hi!
I would like to get your opinions on a few names. Please let me know what you think of the following:
Mary nn Mae (Mae vs. May?) Do you think Mae can stand alone as a full name? Which is the original spelling Mae or May or are both acceptable?
Margaret nn Mae
Elizabeth nn Liza
Elizabeth nn Eliza - I think it might be silly to nn her Eliza because we'd probably just call her Liza anyway (the only Eliza I know always goes by Liza) what do you think?
Lavinia nn Liv - it this just too old fashioned? any other cute nns for it?
Eleanor nn Nell or Nora
Celeste (any nn ideas?)
Honest feedback welcome as well as suggestions of similar names! Thanks in advance!
Liz

I think Mae could stand alone as a full name, but like it as a nickname in case you want to use a full name when you get older. Does that make sense?
I LOVE Lavinia as a name. Can't think of any nn other than Liv. Again, I love this name!
Eleanor is not my favorite, but like Nell. Celeste is very pretty. The only Celeste I know goes by Celeste and has no nickname.

I like almost all these names. Here's what I have to say about each of them:
Mary, nn Mae: I'd just name her Mae. It's much more distinctive, and yes, it's certainly strong enough to stand alone as a name. I prefer this spelling because it looks more like a name, not like a month.
Margaret, nn Mae: I love the name Margaret, though my nn of choice for it is Meg. However, I like Mae as a nn if that's what you'd rather use.
Elizabeth, nn Liza: I don't love Liza, but I don't hate it either. I've proposed Eliza as a nn for Elizabeth before, but I really think of it more as a name in its own right. For Elizabeth, I prefer the nn Libba, but lots of people don't like it.
Lavinia, nn Liv. I love the name Lavinia! And Liv is a good modern nn for it.
Eleanor, nn Nell or Nora: I love, love, love the name Eleanor (only I'd probably spell it Elinor). Nell isn't my favorite nn; Ellie used to be my favorite, but it's so darn popular now. Nora is a great alternative to Ellie; it has the same classic feeling, but you don't hear it as often. My friend, Eleanor, goes by both Elle and Noor.
Celeste: I don't like this name. I don't know why. And I can't think of a single good nn for it...
Margaret nn Mae-- like Margaret; don't like Mae
Elizabeth nn Liza -- like
Elizabeth nn Eliza - I think it might be silly to nn her Eliza because we'd probably just call her Liza anyway (the only Eliza I know always goes by Liza) what do you think?-- Eliza doesn't really work as a nn to me. Liza does.
Lavinia nn Liv - it this just too old fashioned? any other cute nns for it?-- like Liv; don't like Lavinia
Eleanor nn Nell or Nora-- like! Prefer Nell to Nora
Celeste (any nn ideas?)-- like! nn Celie or Ellie
Hi Theresa,
Thank you for your response. I'm interested that you love the name Lavinia. I do too, obviously, but I was expecting some negative feedback. Do you know any Lavinias? Where have you heard the name? It's a family name for my dh. Although I really like it, I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to use it. We'll see! Thanks again!
Liz
Hi!
Thanks for you response!
I also prefer the Mae spelling for the exact same reason you do.
I actually like Nell better than Nora as a nn for Eleanor, but dh agrees with you! I like Nora too though, and he dislikes Nell. So if we went with Eleanor, it would probably be Nora.
Do you know any Lavinias?
Thanks again!
Liz
Hi,
Thanks for your response. I like Ellie as a nn for Celeste, but I'm worried that it's gotten so popular! Celie is cute. I do love Celia, but that seems like stretch and a name in its own right.
Thanks again!
Nope, sorry, I don't know any Lavinias. For me, though this is an incentive to use the name! I want to name my first daughter Rosalie, and I'm just praying that it doesn't skyrocket in popularity between now and the time I have children (though I doubt it will because no one I mention it to seems to like it). I love Lavinia for you even more now that I know it's a family name. You can't get much prettier than Lavinia Margaret, Lavinia Eleanor, or Mae Lavinia.
Nell reminds me of that awful movie with Jodie Foster. I can't say Nell with a straight face anymore. Although, it does remind me of Harper Lee (her first name, and the name that she used, was Nell). That's certainly a good association. Stupid movies...ruin lots of perfectly good names! :-)
Good luck, and let us know how things progress!
lavinia - i LOVE.... and the nn could be lanie, which i also LOVE.
i had a name picked out for my baby but it's a boy, so it's been really hard.
the fav i had was Ansley Michael, cuz Michael is a family name.
but Ansley Mae - depending on your last name could be pretty, but could also sound really country.
