First name that blends into the last?
| Thu, 05-01-2008 - 11:43am |
So I have several names that I like that end with the letter M. This poses a potential problem for me since my last name is Miller and it bothers me a little that the first name blends into the last name (e.g. Ephram Miller ends up sounding like "ephrammmmiller").
DH (and just about everyone else I've mentioned this to) thinks I am crazy. What do you guys think? Would this issue be enough for you to give up a name you love?

I think it is a big no-no to have those letters run together - I'm sitting here trying to think of names that end in M and I'm stymied - what are they - other than Ephraim?
I pretty much always post comments on here to the negative end of that when posters ask for a comment or if they have a voting list

Okay, I am glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way!
Some other names I've had to give up on:
Adam (probably my favorite boy's name)
Graham
Abram
Miriam (although I'm not so sure I want a name that STARTS with M either...)
And of course I've also had to eliminate every name that ends in "er" or "or".
Stupid last name!!
We have the same problem. But I think you have a slight advantage in that Milller is a very common last name. So no one is going to assume that your child's name is "Adam Iller" because Miller is familiar. We have an uncommon last name beginning with M, so I think that might be more of an issue. (I love Callum and Malcolm, but they are both out for this reason.)
It might be more of an issue for you if you choose an uncommon first name, however. For instance, people might hear "Ephra Miller" instead of Ephraim Miller. But I think Adam Miller sounds fine. I wouldn't think twice about that combination. Adam is a great name!
Good luck!

We have the same problem, except our ln starts with an "S" (sounds like Sodder) -- so all names ending in "s" are out (our ln also ends in -er so I hear you there, too, lol!). The "s" thing typically IS a deal breaker for me/us.
I used to like Tess -- but it comes out either Teh Sodder or Tess Otter! We just named our newborn son Axel and can't nn him "Axe" (not that I like that anyway), b/c it would come out Ack Sodder (or Ax Otter).
Our kids' email addy used to be "sodderotters@" lol.
