What type of name would you say Gabrielle is? Classic? Trendy? Other?

I lean toward classic girl names and the ultimate classic to me is Catherine (which I like) followed by Caroline, Elizabeth, Sarah, etc., but I was just wondering where Gabrielle stands...

I actually think of Gabrielle as one of the "new classics". That's just a category I made up, but I think it describes a number of names that aren't true classics (Anne, Mary, Sarah, Catherine, Elizabeth, etc) and yet aren't new names either. (And they definitely aren't trendy, made-up names) These are names that have been used consistantly for 3-4 generations now, so

I agree with Annie it is a "new classic" and I don't think of it as trendy at all. I actually have only known a couple in my life. It is a pretty name, however I really dislike the nn Gabby.

Hmm ... interesting question! ;) I think Annie may be right here. It doesn't exactly fit a certain category because it's not inherently trendy or classic in the real sense of the word, but maybe a new classic would be a better term?

The only thing I might worry about is that because of this it might eventually seem dated (not sure about this, just something to consider). For example, to borrow from a recent thread, my Cabbage Patch Kid's name when I was 5 was Anna Gabrielle, and I thought it was a really beautiful name (still do), and until recently I never even knew a real person named Gabrielle. However, in the past few years alone, I've met many, including our neighbor's 7 or 8 year old, so this strikes me as a name that's just become really popular in the past few years, KWIM? HTH

To me, Gabrielle is a trendy name. I realize it's not a new one, but it's very popular where I am (along with Gabriella) and to me, it lacks the straightforward classicism of Catherine, Sarah, etc.
