My husband and I are expecting our first child (it's a girl!) in April. She will be the 6th grandchild on my side and the second on his side. Since I was a little girl I have always liked the name Fiona and now my husband and I want to use it for our baby!
Well, it seems that almost everyone we encounter thinks it's ridiculous. My grandmother can't even remember it and we keep getting comments like "are you sure you won't reconsider?".
How much advice do you take and when do you draw the line and say to heck with everyone's opinion?
Is Fiona that obscure and different?
Thanks for the feedback in advance!
You would think from a family with not so traditional names for grandkids they wouldn't be so harsh!
We have Levi, Landon, Easton already.......what's one more uncommon name?

Since you are getting flack from your family members, my suggestion is not to discuss names with them.

I don't know why people think that Fiona is a new or made up name. I went to primary school with a Fiona and then High School with another Fiona. Primary school was 1978-1984 and High School 1985-1990.
Tell you family to go away and that both DH and you love the name Fiona.

Wow, I think it's so ironic that you are hearing this sort of feedback because I actually scratched Fiona from my list because I was afraid it was getting too popular!
I think it's a gorgeous name and it's been a favorite of mine for years and years. Lately it's becoming much more well known -- not really popular, but it's coming up a lot more -- probably due at least in part to the Shrek movies. (Though the name was growing steadily in popularity long before those came out.) I've met at least three Fionas under the age of five in the last year or two.
Statistically speaking, Fiona only entered the top 1000 in the US in 1990 and it's already reached #378. There were 818 Fionas born in the US last year alone. That's nothing compared to the 23,544 Emilys, but it's certainly not as obscure as your family thinks it is.
I think it's a lovely name. It's been popular in the UK for a long time and I'm glad to see it making its way over here. It's sweet and pretty and refreshing. I think it's a wonderful choice.
