Ginger, continuing the search....

Hi there,
Well I haven't had a chance to talk to DH about names yet, but I think I have gotten myself fairly set on Oliver John-Garrett. I looked up meanings and started to find really fascinating verses with the names, soooo....

Any last thoughts for me? What would you say the meaning of Oliver John-Garrett is? I've found several meanings for each name and I'm trying to pin it down to one fairly cohesive meaning. So that when gparents and others ask what does it mean? I can say it means .... and have it all set.

When DD#2 was born (Naomi Rochelle) we said her name meant "precious little rock". Later I heard MIL telling someone it meant "pretty little stone"! oh dear! lol

Karen

ps, preggo brain, I hope I'm not "continuing the search" as I oddly wrote in the tag line, but actually that his name has been Found, but I'm still waiting for a good oppurtunity to present it to dh!

I know you addressed this to Ginger, but I had to comment. I think that Oliver John-Garrett is great. I remember your troubles with trying to come up with a name that would honor both the grandpas, and really, I think this is the best alternative. Like you, I'm usually not all-for triple names, but given the family significance here, I really, really like it. And Oliver is a fantastic first name. Good choice...here's hoping your husband approves!

Good luck, and let us know the results of the DH test!

Thank you so much!

I hope I haven't been rude with my posts to Ginger. Anyone and all are welcome to reply to these posts. It's just that I took the liberty of assuming that Ginger wouldn't mind (and would hopefully enjoy) a long drawn out discussion of names surrounding one particular topic -- and have a lot of ideas.

I'm excited to tell DH, I just hope he's as excited about the name as I am!

Karen

No offense taken at all. But don't worry; there are TONS of us (me included) who love nothing more than long, involved discussions about names. And Ginger's great. She's already named my first daughter, and I'm not even pregnant yet!

That's great, what's your "daughter's" name? ;)

Everyone's been great. I had thought I would open this up to a bigger discussion, but the more Ginger and I talked the more it came down to one name... Anyway, I need to thank Jazz, she was the first to put the idea (Oliver John-Garrett) out there!

My "daughter's" name will be Adair Victoria. My first name starts with an A, and my middle name is Victoria after my mother. So I've always sort of wanted to pass my A along and use Victoria as a middle name, but I never could find *the* A name that felt right, though I toyed with Alice for a while. At any rate, there was a post where Ginger talked about all the names she took to the hospital when Wellsley was born, and Adair was among them. It was perfect. I give her all the credit, because I'm not sure I'd have ever thought of it without her.

Again, Oliver is just great. Very masculine without being soap-opera manly (you know, like Blaze or something awful), but also classic and sophisticated. It will grow with him well, I think. Plus, John-Garrett is a great connection to his grandfathers.

Again, thanks so much... I love your "daughter's" name ;) What does Adair mean?

Many sources will just say that the meaning of Oliver is "Olive branch" but an olive branch is a peace offering and a symbol of fruitfulness, beauty and dignity.

It does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?!?!

You are fully aware, aren't you, that Oliver will continue to grow in popularity but you ARE a few minutes AHEAD of the curve?

Oh well, at any rate, it currently rates lower than Lillian or Naomi, so surely this isn't a thorn in your side.

Just wanted to mention the above, one more time.

I think the name, in full, is a very good choice for you!

Oliver is in reference to the offering of the olive branch- i.e. peaceful/loving/kindhearted in nature.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what Adair means. I guess Ginger may have to enlighten both of us. I'm not stuck on name meanings, really. Of course, I don't want anything vulgar or offensive, but I wouldn't *not* use a name just because its meaning was generic or something. That said, I hope the meaning of Adair isn't awful... but then again, it couldn't really be awful, because Ginger knows all about name meanings, and she wouldn't pick one with a bad meaning. I hope... :-)

Well to ab2203 on Adair, I hope all is well with the meaning!

To Annette thank you for the meanings you found.

And to Ginger thanks for the meanings and the endorsement. LOL ;)

We've found that our kid's have become the meaning of their names, so we would like to be careful what we name them!

Lillian Ariana -- pure silver. It takes a process of putting silver into the fire at least 7 times before it's purified -- a lot of tedious work... and well she is. lol

Naomi Rochelle -- precious, sweet little rock. She is all of the above.

So Oliver John-Garrett "The Lord has graciously blessed us with a peaceful, kind-hearted, gentle, brave" son. would be great! or "kind-hearted, brave, honorable one." ;)

Putting all that aside, I typed up the meanings I had and showed DH the name last night-- granted he was very tired, but he didn't give any indication of his thoughts. Basically gave a maybe and asked if I liked it, I said yes if we're naming after the grandpas. Maybe I should've been more enthusiastic?

Oh well.... I'm sure I'll hear soon... I hope!

Oh and yes, I do know that Oliver is on the rise. I was a split second before the curve on Lillian, sigh. But at least it's not as amazingly popular as Owen. There were four born in Aug alone at the hospital I will go to.

Thanks,
I'll let you know (soon?)
