Girl Names

I am so desperate! I am having a girl and me and her father cannot agree with any names for our daughter who is due May 1st. I am torn between Ella which is my grandmother's first name or Joycelyn because Joyce is my mother's middle name. He on the other hand likes the name Mekaia or Jessica of which I am not too fond of. With my son I was able to rattle off names like no tomorrow, but I am at such a stand still for our daughter. Please help!

I think that the name ella is a great name. It is traditional but yet different. I also think that mekaia is very pretty. I have never heard that name before. It is very uniqe. Good luck in your decision.

Hi, and congratulations in advance on your new baby. Of the four names you've listed, I definitely like Ella best, then Jessica. I'm not crazy about Joycelyn (just my opinion), but I understand wanting to use a family name, or a version of a family name. Would Joy be close enough to Joyce? Mekaia is not my style because it sounds made up - - again, just an opinion. What about Michaela, which is kind of similar?

Not sure about Joycelyn...but I can handle Jocelyne.
I dislike Ella...right now it is like naming your kid Jane Smith.
Mekaia sounds unique but the pronunciation might confuse some people.
Jessica is ok.
Joyce-Lynne is ok.

What about:
Eleanor Joy
Elena Joyce
Evelyn Joy
Joy Mekaia

Some ideas:

Gisella, Giselle (kind of a combo of Jessica & Ella; she could be Ella for short)
Joyelle (Joyce + Ella; could use nn Ella)

Other names that can use Ella as a nn.

Ella -- this is very popular (especially since it's used as a nn for so many other names), but I love that it's for your grandmother. As I believe Jazz suggested, you could also use a less-common name with Ella or Elle in it, like Giselle, and use Ella as a nn. That way you still get to name her for your grandmother but she'll have a less popular option if she wants.

Joycelyn -- again, I like that you want to honor your mom, but I'd stick with the traditional spelling and pronunciation of Jocelyn if I were you. It's still for your mom ... the Y is just moved to the "-lyn" suffix. ;)

Mekaia -- I don't feel bad saying this, since you already said you're not fond of dh's favorites , but this looks like something from a bad Tarzan rip-off. "Me Kaia. Him Cheetah. Ugh!" LOL

Jessica -- this is very dated, but I do like Giselle/a as a compromise between Jessica and Ella, as Jazz mentioned. He gets the sound he wants, and you can still call her Ella for your grandmother. Win-win. ;)

mommyagain6124,

Thank you so much for the response. I showed my husband the replies and now he realizes that Mekaia is out the door. I love simple yet, elegant names and Ella just does it for me. We are going back to the drawing board on a middle name. His mother is deceased and her name was Sally so now he wants to try to maybe chose another first name and give her Sally as a middle. I am not crazy about the name, but I understand him wanting to honor his mother who has been gone for over 20 years. So I will keep you guys posted. I may just just as my mother said wait until she is born and see her and a name will come to me. Keep us in your prayers.

I just wanted to let you know, my FAVORITE name is Mekaia but my husband and his family hate it so I can't use it either (my family likes it)... I guess I gave up on the name although seeing someone else post about it....... :)

I do like Ella, it is another one of my favorites!

With our son Kaiden I named him so I was trying to be fair and let him give our daughter her first name and I do want to meet him halfway. Mekaia isn't that bad and is actually growing on me, it's just trying to find something that goes along with it. Wish us luck! Are you due soon? I am due May 1st.

I am scheduled for a c-section 3/28, I can't wait, except the name part... we still don't have one either! My name was Mekaia Grace, only because I wanted the first one to be grace if it was a girl but he was a boy so we named him chase... Caden was going to be my boy name for the first one at first, but my new neighbor's daughter had that name... but with Mekaia I thought it was unusual but pretty and I could just imagine a little girl saying her own name ha, cheesy but I still love it :)

Good luck w/ your names, at least it sounds like your husband gives you some input, grr... wish mine would! (He liked Sky the first time, boy or girl, and this time Payton... )
