I need your help. DH and I have conflicting names for our baby in case of a girl. He likes Bailey Anne, and I like Colleen (I'm not sure of a mn yet!). Our last name is McDaniel. Any input would be appreciated.

I'm sorry in advance to all the Baileys out there, but Bailey is my pet peeve name. It just doesn't appeal to me, and even less now that I know SO many of them. Plus, to me, one of the major considerations when naming a child is how well the name "grows up" as the child ages. Bailey is cute until about age...8...13 tops. And it's never really more than cute, in my honest opinion. Also Bailey is very popular and still growing as a name for pets. As a Ginger(which was the #1 dog name in America and popular for cats in the 70s and 80s when I was growing up), I can tell you, it's not fun being the same name as the household pet in every house you visit.

Colleen is more enduring, so much less trendy, and familiar YET unique...grows up well with a female too. Although I must admit that it's a little heavy for an infant or toddler...I'm usually not a fan of nn, but in this case, I think Leena might be more appealing while she's small...Or sort of a pet name like Coll. You could even do Colleen Anne or Colleen Anna McDaniel and call her Cami (Initials CAM) while she's young. And still, Colleen could probably really grow on me for a young girl once I got used to it. I definitely like it for a grown woman!!!

I like Colleen Michelle or some other family name for the mn. As a mom of grade-schoolers, I know firsthand that kids really like to be named after someone.

Other ideas for mn...

1. Your maiden name

2. Some feminine variation of dh's name

3. Name from one of the grandmothers

4. Name that has a great meaning/definition

Or Anna Colleen, Colleen Bailey as compromise. To me Colleen Bailey McDaniel is much more distinguished, just a thought. I'm so sorry that I've been so brutally honest, but Bailey is my least fave girl name...if it helps, I do believe I'm in the minority on this! LOL

Best wishes, Ginger

Since you are using Braden for a boy...I think Bailey would be too cutesy if they became a sibling set down the road...but on the flipside of that Braden is more contemperory and Colleen is very tradtional. So I am not sure that sibling pair is the best either...

Claire would be a very pretty alternative. Claire McDaniel sounds very nice and Braden and Claire makes a nice sibling set.

Good luck!

I really like Colleen, heads and shoulders above Bailey. It's such a pretty name, and very rarely heard nowadays. Plus, contrary to what a previous poster said, I think that it works well on small children/babies AND adults. It's not too "heavy" of a name, in my book, considering all the old fashioned names that are in vogue now, such as Evelyn and Josephine and Margaret.

As for a middle name, I am not crazy about Colleen Anne, only because both names end in the "n" sound. I did like a previous suggestion of Colleen Michelle.

Here are some others:

Colleen Abigail

Colleen Allison

Colleen Bridget

Colleen Brooke

Colleen Darcy

Colleen Elizabeth

Colleen Emily

Colleen Erin

Colleen Grace

Colleen Joy

Colleen Margaret

Colleen Mary

Colleen Paige

Colleen Rose

Colleen Shannon

Colleen Tierney

Colleen Whitney

Good luck!

Definitely Colleen! I have two great friends with this name and they are both beautiful, cool, fun, nice...I have an Irish background and have always loved this name. It is sweet, girlish, and ages well too. Bailey on the other hand, while cute enough, seems trendy and insubstantial to me. It would be adorable on a 6 year old, not as great on an adult in my opinion. Perhaps as a compromise to your husband so that he feels included too, you could have Colleen Bailey?

I love Colleen. I know too many little girls named Bailey but that might just be in my area. I like the name It is just too common around here.
