Girls names - what do you think?
| Fri, 01-05-2007 - 10:23pm |
Hi there - my husband and I are having trouble deciding/agreeing on a name for our daughter who will be born any day now!
What do you think of the name Winter for a girl? We can't decide?!
Other options are:
Carolina
Lily
Mae
Sophia
Siena
Holly
Any opinions would be welcome! Thanks :)

Welcome!
Winter: this is not really my style, sorry. I think this would work well as a middle name. You might like Neiva/Neva for a mn too, these names mean snow.
Your list:
Carolina - great name and I think that Carolina Winter is an awesome name! I love all the nn options for this name too: Cara, Carrie, Carly/Carlie, Caddy/Caddie, Callie, Linny.
Lily - this is too popular for me - what about Iris, Calla, Ivy, or Violet?
Mae - I like this too! Mae Winter sounds nice. I also like Maeve
Sophia - way too hot right now, but this is a pretty name
Siena - is this like the city in Italy or do you mean the color - Sienna? I think that with one "N" the child and you will always be making spelling corrections.
Holly - this name is ok, just not my favs - I like Ivy and Calla so much more. You might also like Felicity.
Good luck - let us know what you decide!
Brooke
thanks everyone for your opinions & suggestions ... it was great to get feedback about "winter"... it's one of those names that i like at 3am when I can't sleep, but don't like when i wake up .. so wanted to run it by some people!!
I find Winter to be a bit cheesy, but that's just my opinion. I'm not a fan of word names in general (ie. Summer, April, Faith, Destiny, etc.)
Carolina- I like this, nice and classy
Lily- There are 2 reasons why I say no to this. 1) It is too cutesy and nicknamey. 2) It is too popular. Lilianna nn Lily and other such Lily names are skyrocketing! It will be the next big name, along with Ava
Mae- This is gorgeous. So simple and sweet, and uncommon too. My favourite from the list
Sophia- Okay, I am getting tired of it. I prefer Sophie, which I find sweeter, but either are not amazing IMO. I have heard them popping up on TONS of people's lists, but they rarely seem to make it as #1
Siena- Seems trendy next to your other choices, also, I would go wtih the common Sienna spelling to avoid problems
Holly- It surprises me, but I actually like Holly. I generally don't like word names. It is probably because I met the sweetest little girl named Holly, so when I hear it, I think of someone very sweet. Typically though, the name is not my style.

I'm not wild about Winter, but it sounds like you've ruled that out already. You've got some great choices on your list though:
Carolina -- love this. Caroline is my top choice for a girl, Carolina is lovely.
Lily -- very popular and on it's way out, but still lovely. If you don't mind the popularity factor, this is a great choice. Sweet and feminine.
Mae -- I love this name and it's one that's rising in popularity right now. With this one, you're a little ahead of the trends instead of following them, which is nice. This also makes a great middle name.
Sophia -- I've always loved this name. It's VERY popular, but if that doesn't bother you, it's a great choice. Very pretty.
Siena -- I don't like this one nearly as much as the others. It doesn't have that timeless feel of the others. (They may be popular right now, but they are classics that have been around forever. Siena feels more modern and trendy.) Also it's the name of a very popular minivan and I try to avoid "car names" when possible.
Holly -- okay. I don't like it as much as your other choices, but it's nice. I much prefer Molly, which is a long-time favorite of mine.
I'm kind of like you--Winter is one of those names that I like at times and other times, not so much.
