Good Name, Bad Meaning

I like the name Mallory but the meaning is unlucky.

Should I forget about the meaning?

I'm not superstitious, but do believe a name has a part in the development of a child.

I like the name you have choosen but I know when I was in school we had to write a paper of the meaning of our name and read it in front of the class. How many kids want to get up in front of class and read much less say that their name means unlucky. Its a tough decision....Best of Luck!!!

If it were me & I had picked out a name I loved I wouldn't NOT use it because of its meaning. How many people - besides us name addicts - pay attention to meanings of names?

To most people I don't think it would matter. I really believe strongly in the meaning of names though, so its a tough decision. If you REALLY love the name, go for it. Personally, I don't really like it, but its not my choice! You could considered
Malana
Malaya
Melanie
Malia
Malin
Malina
Malinda/Melinda
Melissa
Melise
These names are have a similar sound. I think you might like Malinda or Melinda- its similar to Mallory.

Yes, forget about the meaning! Mallory is a great name! (Wow, Melanie, Janelle and now Mallory...I am SO glad to see these names on this board!!!!)

btw, my name means "consecrated to God" or "oath of God" and I am not religious in the least :) so the meaning would have no sway on me!

I would just forget about the meaning, its a beautiful name. I know 3 girls named Mallory(all high school seniors) and 2 of them cheer with me for our school and 1 is the captain of the soccer team. They are all very popular and sweet. So it seems like the unlucky meaning had no effect on them or the success.

Hi there,
I think Mallory is a lovely name, and I don't think that meanings matter too much (I thought when I was little, after looking my own name up in a book, that it meant "See Judith" - lol!). So many names these days have untraceable meanings, that I wonder whether schools will be able to continue having these research-your-name's-meaning projects anyway. I thought I'd just suggest a slight variation though: what about Mellory? I think the root 'mel' usually means honey, while 'mal' usually means bad. I actually have a friend whose sister is Meleri, and she is Welsh, so maybe this is a more authentic spelling?
HTH,
Jodi

My DH and I have debated the same thing. We like the name Mallory too but was unsure about the meaning. If something God forbid ever happen would that always be in your back of your head. "If only I had named her something with a positive meaning, then she might not have fell and broke her leg" LOL I don't think they live up to the meaning of a name. But it is a personal battle.... most people dont know the meanings of names, so you will have to be the one that has to be okay with it.

I like the name and say to go for it. Maybe putting a MN with a nice meaning that makes it more "meaning" friendly. Best of luck to you!!

I really like the name Mallory - it's a shame about the meaning

the reason there are people named Mallory is that some people pay no attention to that

but if you unable to overlook that, then it could be a problem

I can't suggest to you what to do. Me, I'd use it. it doesn't bother me

but if it bothers you, you might end up dwelling on it a lot.

how about Hilary as an alternative - similar sound, although I don't know what the meaning is.

I'm actually going to agree with soccermom (which she knows is something I don't do often!) but she's right; there are people who can overlook the meaning, which is why there are people named Mallory around. I think Mallory's a lovely name and don't mind the meaning myself, but if you're already brooding about it, you may find that you're unhappy with Mallory before long and you may very well regret using it for your daughter. I'll even second soccermom's suggestion of Hilary/Hillary (I like Hillary on a girl, Hilary's the boy spelling to me because of Sir Edmund Hilary!). Hillary means "cheerful" and is related to the word hilarious. I think Hillary's a great choice if you love Mallory but can't get past the meaning!
