I was so happy to see a recent post from you ... I just love your taste in names. We've posted back and forth a few times over the years. Here I am due in a little over a week, and I'm still agonizing over my boy name! Remember, my boys are Zachary Ty and Zane Michael ... LN Richards.
Well, DH and I settled on Luke Zephan, but now I'm worried that Luke is getting too popular. I know Zachary is still popular, but we've been so spoiled with Zane that we really like that unique aspect. I think perhaps I'm focusing too much on how well the three names flow?
I've ruled out a few names we both love, Daxton (rhymes too much with Zach), Kai (just not the right feel, too surfy) and Finn (maybe too Irish?). Here's some of my other ideas:
Luke Zephan (current top contender)
Zephan Brent (nn Zeff, DH Brent)
Zephan Trace (nn Zeff)
Trace ?????
Quentin/Quinton James (nn Quinn, neat w/ #5 reference, like that Q!)
Ashton (nn Ash) ????? (getting popular, but not nearly as much as Luke)
Declan (nn Dex) (too Irish?)
If you could offer your opinions, I would so appreciate it. You always have such reasonable and great advice!
TIA,
MB

Luke Zephan is the perfect fit; however, I truly believe Luke is the "new" Jake/Jack.
I love Zephan as a fn, yet I don't recommend Zeff for the simple reason that he will constantly have to correct people about Jeff...I've seen parents find a neat name that is similar to a well-known name over and over and...over and over they have to correct people. Quinton is also a great fit; and I think the Q is a neat carry-over on the Z. I would spell it this if you're going to nn Quinn.
Finn is darling but too Irish with the others and will continue to grow in popularity.
Two things I think you should maintain in naming #3: 1. The use of a new letter, but still an unusual "feel" to the name ex. K, Q, X(Quint, Kai,etc.) and 2. A strong name that is either short or has a short nn.
ALSO< An idea came to me as I was reading your post: What about taking the middle initial of your other two kids for this child's initials- Either T.M. or M.T.
Trace Maddux Richards, Trace Mitchum Richards, Trace Markham Richards, Trace Milan Richards, Talbot (nn Tal) Mason Richards, Talbot Mark Richards, Theodore Metz Richards (Theo), Trenton (nn Trent) Mantz
Maddux Treighton Richards, Maddux Torr Richards, Metz Tristan Richards, Metz Talbot Richards, Metz Tolbert Richards, Mantz/Manse Tyler Richards
Other name possibilities- Breckin(Breck), Lars, Leverett (Lev),
Breckin Quint, Lars Quinton or Quinton Lars, Leverett Gage, Lev Quinton, or Leverett Quinton?
If you decide to do another Z name- I prefer Zebulon (nn Zeb). I love Zephan, but not shortened. A Z middle name might be the solution with a neat first name: I thought of a few L names that you might could quickly warm up to as replacements for Luke-
Lars Zephan, Lander Zephan, Lev, Locke - I love Locke Zephan..., Lorr, Lex
Lex Zander?
Others- Ames, Hunt, Fletcher, Flint?
What about Jantzen Luke or Jantzen Zeb? Jantz is a cute nn. Names that end in -Z or Z- sound are a neat twist on the other two, to me. Jantz, Metz, Lars, Lex, etc.
One more possibility- Zebulon Luke Richards, nn Zeb?
I have only suggested name combinations that I would personally consider for my own child! I think any of these would be a great match. I love Quinton Lars, Lars Zephan or any of the T.M. initial combos, esp. Trace Maddux, Trenton Mantz & Metz Talbot. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of more assistance. I'm thrilled about the upcoming birth of baby boy #3!! Luck & Joy to you, Ginger
I am all about using a middle name that is after someone!!!
So, I have two more things to add:
1. Brent's name is a GREAT fit with your two sons!! Maybe this baby should have the Br- sound, so that you have two Z's and two Br's!! Br- names have that same "feel" to them.
Suggestions- Breckin, Brantley, Bridger, Bryson, Braden(nn Brady), Brooks, Bretton
Breckin Lars, Bridger Quinton, Bryson (poss. nn Bryce) James, Brooks Quinton, Bretton Luke
Or just a B-name- Burke, Berkeley(Berke), Blaze
Blaze Trenton, Burke Jameson?
2. Using Brent's name as mn- Wade Brenton? Lars Brenton? Metz Brenton?
Metz Brenton Richards...sigh...or Lars!! Love it, Ginger
Is this any less surfer? Kylar Brent Richards?
Hartley Brent (Hart)? Jantzen Brent? Nyle Brenton?
Are you opposed to double initals, because I like Rex with your other two. Rex Brenton Richards?
Brody Quinton, Brody Zephan
Or my all-time fave Br- name - Brogan... Brogan James, Brogan Lars, Brogan Quint?
OR Zephan Brent, no nn.
I just keep on thinking of more! Also, a side note, where I am Ashton is more popular than Luke!! With the t.v. visibility of Ashton Kutcher, I predict continued growth.
I prefer the more stately- Asher. I love Asher Luke, Asher Brent (nn Ash) or Archer.
Archer Brent...
Zachary, Zane and Archer is a great fit. Oh well, I've given you way too much to think about! Let me hear back and take it easy, Ginger
Theo, Waco, Rocco, Milo, Marco- Milo Brent Richards, Milo James Richards, Milo Zephan Richards? I love Milo! For that matter, Miles. Has that Z- sound on the end...Miles Brenton Richards?
A few more--- Pierce, Drake, Judd
LOVE Drake with the others- Drake Zephan.
I'm also currently in love with Beckett, nn Beck. And, have you considered Quade?
You should have never asked for my help. Now I'm on a mission! Ginger
One new development is the possible use of John somewhere. It's been used for 4 generations now, and we thought DH's oldest brother (John Brian) would carry on the tradition. Considering that he is 40+ and unattached, it's looking like this may be the last chance for a John Richards. Add the fact that DH's grandfather's (John Richards Sr.) b-day is Sept. 3, (my EDD is the Sept. 5) and that's a pretty strong call to incorporate John! So, we have ...
John Zephan or John Quinton (called Zephan or Quinn, respectively)
and another combo I like
Quinn Matthew
I'm really liking Quinn lately, but can't decide between Quinton or Quinn.
Let me see what you've suggested here and I'll get back ... I know I saw a lot of promising ideas.
Oh, and by the way ... we don't even know the gender, so you and I are *both* completely nuts! My frontrunner girl name is Taegan Marie, but DH is liking Zoe Katherine quite a bit ... I lean away from the Z.
Hugs and more later ...

So far, I haven't been able to get *anyone* (much less DH) to bite with Trace, even though I think it's pretty cool. Ditto with Metz for DH.
However, these are the combos I like the best from your list of ideas ...
Trace Maddux
Trenton Mantz
Breckin Quint
Locke Zephan (DH said Locke sounds like a Norseman?)
Zebulon Luke
Bryson James
Brooks Quinton
Bretton Luke
Blaze Trenton (tossed this option out a while ago, DH said Blaze is too soap opera-ish)
Wade Brenton
Rex Brenton (sat next to a co-worker named Rex!)
Brogan Quint
Drake Zephan
Beckett ??? (this has been on the outskirts of my list for a while, so funny to see it on yours too!)
And DH said he prefers Quinton/Quinn over Quade ... asked him last night! I was thinking that Quentin should be pronounced "Qwent-in", and Quinton "Qwint-in", but everyone around here was saying them the same way. It makes much more sense to me to use the Quinton spelling if we like Quinn as the nn, but I almost like the look of Quentin better (maybe a tad more Western feel?)
Anyway, it's great to have a list with some fresh ideas, because I've been so stuck with the same five or six options. I am compiling my exhaustive list and will just take it with me to the hospital.
I'm just praying for a girl so I can have an easier time choosing a name! BTW - any middle name ideas you may have for Taegan or Zoe are also appreciated! I know Marie is so common, but I kind of like the contrast with Taegan, I think Taegan needs a very feminine MN.
Signing off for now ...
Hugs and many thanks again!

If I were to name your son right now...as hard as it is to let go of some of the other unusual choices, I would choose John Quinton. Quinton gives you the Q with the Z, John is a strong family name, and here's another cool coincedence... Wouldn't this John be the fifth John, and Quint means five...I would nn Quint or Quent (either spelling is fine to me, if you call him Quint).
In most cases, I strongly prefer any name as either male or female. Quinn is the one name I really like either way. SO don't get me wrong; I love the nn Quinn. But, it is being used on girls a lot now. That may not overly concern you, but if the growth of Quinn for girls continues (and I think it probably will) your son probably won't like it.
These are my thoughts for now. I will respond to your newest post shortly. Hugs to you as well, Ginger
With Beckett, I like John. John Beckett.
I LOVE some of the new choices you listed, particularly Trenton Mantz & Brooks Quinton.
A side note- Will it be okay with the unattached brother for you to go ahead and use John. I know it shouldn't matter, he doesn't have a copyright on the name. Yet it's funny how things these turn out sometimes... I've seen it happen.
GIRLS---Amazingly, this one is blaringly easy for me. Aquinnah Kathryn, called Quinn.
Love it, love it, slept on it last night, still love it.
Zoe is a great name that grows well with a female, but I don't think I'd continue the Z- name. Here's why: Zachary is a great name, a strong name. Zane is a fabulous name, a strong name. Zoe is a neat name, very distinctive. When combined as three sibs, Zach, Zane & Zoe...they're all, well, cute...Sorry, I'm known for letting my opinion be known. Take it for what it's worth- 2 cents.
Taegan is great and it's ironic that you do the same thing I do. When I consider a very unique first name, I immediately pair it with a very ordinary middle name. This brings the name "back to earth." For that reason, I think Taegan Marie is a good choice. I also like that it uses the initials in the mn of the two boys, that way all sibs are still connected in a not-so-blatant way.
Others I like- First names I love with the boys(even though you didn't ask)-
Thea Kathryn(thee-uh)
Gemma Kathryn (like the man's name Jim)
Phoebe Kathryn(a less popular Zoe-name, and still has that uniqueness)
Ayla Marie
Arden Marie
Xanthe (zann-thee)- Marie/Kathryn (LOVE THIS NAME< CAN'T GET ANYONE TO BE BOLD ENOUGH TO USE IT)
Other Zoe-like names- Nealy, Darcy, Rainey, Penelope, Remi, Neve(neve or nevvy), Esme(es-may), Daphne, Lorelei, Annika
Other Taegan-like names- Tatum, Larsen, Gracen, Laken, Aspin, Hadley, Romney, Wetherly, Sutton, Channing, Collin, Darrien
Let me know what you're thinking. For the moment, I'm voting John Quentin & Aquinnah Kathryn (I know I sp. Kathryn different than you). With Trenton Mantz & Phoebe Kathryn in a close second place. Joy, Ginger
