Have you heard of the name Django (the 'D' is silent)? Are you familiar with the Jazz musician Django Reinhardt?

Our son's name is most likely going to be Django Jackson (Jackson being the middle, not last name). I received a lot of neg. feedback regarding the name Django on another board, however, in my community which is very rich culturally, and aware of the musician with the same name, I have gotten very positive feedback. Just curious how many people know this name and aren't completely freaked out by it. If you hate it, that's okay, it doesn't bother me if you do.

I have never heard of it and until you said the D was silent I had no idea how to pronounce it. I'm not a big fan of this name only because it is going to get mispronounced a lot. But since it seems to be known in your neighborhood and since you are honoring a musician than if you like I say go for it.

I've never heard the name, so obviously I'm not familiar with the musician. However, since you explained the pronounciation (I never would have gotten it!) and why you like it, I like it too! To tell the truth, the name is not my style, (which is usually code for "I hate it!"), but I like how you have introduced and given a cultural reference for the name. And the name definitely has a wonderful sound to it. Ok, you've convinced me! I like it!

Good luck! I hope you use it.

Do you know the background of the name? You should find out if that's his given name, or a nickname. I have two stories to share.

When I was in school I knew a guy whose nickname was "Pud." A friend of mine really liked "Pud" and, to show her affection, named her kitten "Pud". What she later found out was that "Pud" was slang for a piece of male anatomy.

The second story is more closely related to your post. My BIL lived in England for a number of years. His first wife was English and had never been to the US. Her oldest son's name was Illinois. When they came to visit I told her that I was from Illinois. Believe it or not, she didn't even know that there was such a place as Illinois. SHe and her first husband had named the son after Illinois Jacquet, the (late) Jazz musician.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I've never heard of the musician, but I really like Django! I think your son will enjoy having that name. Django has an African sound to my ears, but reminds me of Maceo, one of the musician's in the great James Brown's band. My youngest son has an unusual name - Kevasi - and I often hear people tell him when they meet him, "Wow, cool name!" I say, trust your convictions and ignore the naysayers. Best of luck to you, and congrats!

I've never heard it, am not familiar with that particular musician. It reminds me a little too much of the word "jangle". I wouldn't say I "hate" it, but it's definitely not something I would use. Not everyone in his life is going to know by looking at it that you don't say the D - he'll be correcting people a lot. and on top of that, Jackson as a middle name with it doesn't go right at all, both start with not only the same sound, but the same first two sounds - ja . it's not a good sound together at all.

sorry, you wanted to hear what we though, that's my thought.

good luck.

I do know a couple that has a son named Django! But, I just assumed it was spelled Jengo like the game. Hmmm...I wonder if they spell it that way, too. I actually thought it was cool when I heard it.

Also, there is a fabulous restaurant in NYC named Django.

I say that if you really love the name...then go for it!!! Everyone will adjust to the name and more than likely love it soon after hes born. Its impossible to find a name that everyone is going to love, so do what makes you happy - you're the mom!!
