Having trouble with names

Hi, my name is julie. DH and I are expecting our 2nd baby in October and we are having lots of trouble coming up with a name that sounds ok with his last name (Nguyen--pronounced 'win') and will also go well with our son's name, Matthew. We will not find out the sex of the baby, so we need to be prepared with both boys and girls names.

I tend to like more traditional names. I am kind of bummed that most names that end in "N" do not go well with Nguyen. Examples are Benjamin "win" or Brenden "win" are too rhyme-y. I also like William, but Will "win" is silly sounding. One syllable names are usually no good with a one-syllable last name. Example, Jack "win"--almost sounds like Jacqueline. Or Kate "win"--almost sounds like Kaitlin. UGH.

I like Juliana Nicole for a girl. But DH is unsure about naming after me as my name is Julie (middle is ann). I thought this would be a nice name and we can call her Annie or Liana. DH prefers just Liana. I'm not sold.

I am clueless for boys names. I like Garrett, but it doesnt sound great with Matthew. DH likes Alexander. I'm not so sure. It's so hard because nothing is just jumping out at us as the "right" name.

Sorry this got so long. Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Hi Julie,

For a boy, I think Garrett sounds great with your last name, and I happen to think it goes nicely with Matthew. I also really love Alexander! If Matthew goes by Matt, I would go for Alexander and call him Alex. If Matthew doesn't have a nn, I would go with Garrett. A few other ideas:

Derek
Emmett
Oliver
Trevor
Connor
Caleb
Elijah
Jonas
Tobias nn Toby
Porter
Spencer

For a girl, I like Juliana very much. I like the nn Annie and Liana. I prefer Juliana to Liana as a full name though. I am named after my mother, but we have different nns. I think it's very special and calling her Annie or Liana will prevent confusion. A few other ideas:

Elise
Camilla
Amelia nn Mia or Amy
Annabel
Sophie
Lila
Georgia
Charlotte
Clara
Eliza
Lydia
Cecily
Eleanor nn Nora
Sabrina
Serena

Boys:
I really like both Garrett and Alexander for you. I think they both go nicely with Matthew. Other ideas are Nicholas, Lucas, James, Nathaniel, Zachary, and Timothy.

Girls:
I think Julianna is beautiful. I really like Matthew and Julianna together. Liana is also lovely, and less popular which is nice. Other ideas: Charlotte, Adeline, Cora, Alexandra/Alexandria/Alexis, Sophie, Clara, and Juliet.

I think if I were you, I'd go with Juliana and call her Liana. I'm with you, Liana doesn't seem like a "real" enough name to me. Plus, I liek its relationship to your name. I'm named for me mom and it's nice, albeit rare occurance!

I think Garrett goes with Matthew fine (the double t in both is a nice connection). But Alexander also works (not quite as well for me). All in all, I think you have a great start. I'll do some more thinking and if I come up with other options, I'll post them later.

Hi there, Julie. I love the name Matthew; great work there!

It does seem like you have a diffacult ln to work w/. I'm glad that you realize it though; sometimes people ignore how a fn sounds w/their ln. It drives me nuts! Good for you. ;)

I think that Juliana is very pretty, & it's nice to honour Mom. It would get a bit confusing though if you call her by her full name. Annie is a good nn, but I'd spell it Julianna then. Juliana looks like Julie-Ahn-uh to me. In that case, you would have Ani (Ah-nee) as a nn. I really love Ani personally, but Julianna makes more sense if you want Annie. I also love Liana as a full name. Beautiful. Here are a few more suggestions that you might like:

I like Garrett for a boy a lot, & it sounds great w/Matthew. Why don't you like it? Alexander is a handsome choice as well. Here are some boy suggestions:
