He Who Must Still Be Named

DH and I are really into LotR, Narnia, Harry Potter, etc. Our first two boys are named after characters from the Chronicles of Narnia: Caspian Philip and Emeth Owen. Today we found out we're expecting another boy and this time we're at a loss for names. We had a girls name picked out but there's not a lot of other boys names from that particular series that we like. DH dreamed a couple of weeks ago that we had a boy and named him Edmond Albert, but neither of us like the idea of shortening it to Ed or Eddy. I kind of like the name Diggory because it crosses fandoms with Harry Potter but it's hard to imagine an adult named Diggory. DH has said I can put the name Gwydion on my list. That one is from the Prydain Chronicles. DH said he would rather not use LotR names because of the popularity of the movie (otherwise i would use Theoden). So what do you think? did you ever read a book and think "that would be a great name but i would never have the guts to name my child that"? if so please give me some ideas. the middle name will probably be Albert or Stephen which are both family names. cara

Theoden is a good choice, even though the movies are popular, I still don't think that there would that many who would make the connection unless you told them. I can not think of any names from the books off hand, sorry.
I do give you credit for naming your kids after something you love like that though! I am a big fan of Roman times and the names, but don't have the guts to use the names and even if I did, there is NO WAY my DH would go along with it. Otherwise I would use names like Lucius and Cassius for my boys and I'd love to name my girl Octavia. (My first choice was Livia after Augustus' wife, but then Olivia became so popular that it kind of ruined the meaning for me!)

I have to agree with Theresa! Theoden would be a great choice for you, and I don't think it's going to be that popular/recognizable to anyone but die-hard fans such as yourselves. ;) I'd assume most would simply think it a form of Theodore and not say another word about it.
Unfortunately, I also have no other suggestions, so I hope that helps a bit anyway! LOL

I love Theoden and Gwydion both! I agree with the PPs; I don't think Theoden is *all* that recognizable as a LOTR character -- not like Frodo, LOL.
I love all of those books myself -- I can't think of any more good names off the top of my head, but I will certainly post again if I do!

I love the idea of continuing the Narnia theme. I love both Caspian and Emeth. I think Edmund would make a really nice sibling name. I understand not like Ed/Eddie - how do you feel about Ted or Ned? I dislike Ed/Eddie, but like both of those. If you introduced them early on you wouldn't have to worry about the Ed/Eddie issue. Or you could try to enforce a no-nn preference. I like Diggory in theory, but I don't think it would be great for an adult. I do, however, like Kirke (which is Diggory's last name) and Ketterley (which is his uncle's last name).
I found a nice list of characters from the Narnia books, it would be a good list to browse and refresh your mind for the smaller characters that are easier to forget. It's been a long time since I read any of the books but LWW (which I read right before the movie came out) so I'm struggling to remember who a lot of these people are. From that list I loved Corin, and also liked Cole and Colin, though they are more common so I'm not sure the allusion is as strong.
Here is the list so you can peruse it:

Good luck!
our girls name would have been Aravis from 'the Horse and His Boy'. I like the name Kirke also. did you know it means church in scottish. but we have to many Trekie friends for that one and i couldn't deal with the William Shatner jokes.
DH is flat out refusing Theoden. *sigh*

we had several people suggest Lucy when we were still thinking pink. another narnian girls name i like is Helen. she was the first queen of Narnia in 'the Magicians Niephew'.
what do you think of the name Gryphin? it's welsh and it means 'Strong in Faith'.

I love love love Lucy, but it is SO FREAKING POPULAR here. Way more than it is nationally. In Steven's preschool class (16 kids) there FOUR Lucys. And I could name, off the top of my head, at least 5 more that I know in town, all under the age of three.
i woke up this morning with Gryphin Thomas Moore stuck in my head.
Thomas is my grandfather's name and DH's uncle. I love it and DH says definatly maybe.
