So, are we looking at Mason (something) Alexander, Mason Alexander (something) or Mason Alexander Mason? Either of the first two would be fine; the last would definitely be an eyebrow-raiser, like the Matt Matthews I knew in college where it just seemed like his parents were either 1) making a not-so-funny joke or 2) not willing to put much effort into his name. But as long as HIS last name wouldn't be Mason, I think it's fine.
I think it's absolutely wonderful that you want to give your son your maiden name as his first name. It obviously has a lot of meaning and someday he will appreciate that you gave him a name that meant a lot to you and gives him a connection with his family history. Do not let your MIL change your mind. There is nothing at all weird about passing down your maiden name. This is a very common, long-standing tradition.
As for her wanting to name the baby Tyler...too bad. She had her chance to name a son. This is your turn and she needs to let you make your own decisions. If you and your husband both love Mason Alexander, you should absolutely go with that name. She might complain a little at first, but she will get over it. (And, by the way, I think it's a great name!)
I would tell the MIL that she already got a chance to name her own babies and to mind her own business! That really bugs me when people get involved uninvitingly like that.
Anyways, I think using your maiden name is a *great* idea... ONLY if it is not his last name. You are right- that is just strange and looks like you put no thought into it. HOWEVER, Mason with a different last name is great.
You're fine...and don't worry about your MIL wanting a different name. I think they may all be like that! (Mine wanted Paul.) Just smile, nod and say "we're going a different direction." No need to be mean, but it is your baby to care for and naming is part of the package.

This is a joke... right?
I love the idea of using mom's maiden name as fn for a child, esp. when the name happens to already be well-known as a fn.
