Help a new mom!

We are expecting our first baby (a boy) and are struggling with names. My preference has moved somewhat recently from trendy names to more traditional ones. Some of the ones I like are Henry, Andrew, and George. I especially like George b/c it was my great-grandfather's name and he was without a doubt the most beloved member of my mom's entire extended family (you know that ancestor that everyone mentions as though they were a saint?) Ironically no one else in the family has named their son George.

I think George is actually on its way back in popularity, since it has so much in common with other popular names like James, John, etc. BUT - its not there yet. So, bottom line, will he be teased with the name George? Have I just convinced myself its a good name? Also, what middle names go well with George? Our last name is 2 syllables and starts with a K.

Thanks!

I think that George is a nice name and he would be the only one in class with it. My oldest son (age 19) is named Christopher. Every year around Columbus day he would be called Christopher Columbus. It was nothing horrible and never lasted to long. He never hated his name because of it. I see the same thing happening with George around the time of Washingtons birthday. Or maybe it will never happen. It is not a name I would worry about teasing.

George is a nice name! I've never met a little George, and I can't remember the last time I saw it on a local birth announcement. So, as far as popularity in the U.S. goes, I think you're safe. I don't think it would cause teasing any more than any other classic name would.

George Andrew K-- and George Henry K-- have a nice ring to them. Some other ideas:

George Anthony
George Christopher
George Daniel
George Ethan
George Nathaniel
George Patrick
George Robert
George Sebastian
George Stephen
George Thomas
George Vincent

But of all of these, I think my favorite is George Andrew! Good luck!

Edited to remove George Ian, after it occurred to me that it looks like "Georgian"

I think George is a great name, and I love the significance it has for you! I definitely think this name is going to grow in popularity in the upcoming years, so I wouldn't worry too much about teasing. Ten years ago, people would have told you to avoid Henry and Oliver because they were "old men" names and now they are quite popular.

I only knew one George (my age) growing up. We called him Gorgeous George, which is a pretty complimentary nickname!

I say go for it!

I agree with you that George could be ready for a comeback along with Henry, Owen, and some of the other "old man" names. It's not my style, but I think it's a solid name and one that has great meaning for your family.

I did know of one baby George born about 4 years ago b/c I worked with the proud grandmother. :-) She said that her daughter did take some flack for using the name, but I can't imagine that his classmates would think much of it. If anything, he might get "Curious George" or "George Washington" comments, but neither one is a huge deal, IMO.

I actually think your thoughts on George are well-founded. Other similarly-styled names are currently popular or on the rise, including Henry and Andrew, which you mentioned. So while George itself isn't overwhelmingly popular yet, it certainly won't seem odd next to all the little boys named Henry, Oliver, Simon, John, Jack, etc. I think it's great you've found a name that fits the style you're looking for, honors a beloved relative AND isn't too popular. Great choice!

With George being one syllable and your ln being two, a three-syllable mn would work great. I'd also avoid any G/J mns or any that begin or end with the K sound. Some ideas:

George Oliver
George Avery
George Elliott (good if you're a fan of literature, but maybe not otherwise )
George Everett
George Ackerley
George Alastair
George Tobias
George Thaddeus
George Nathaniel
George Sutherland
George Severin

I haven't read the other responses yet, so sorry if you've already heard any of this. ;)

I like George. I don't think of it as a teasing name. Think of George Clooney! I have a cousin named George, and I don't think he ever got teased.

The only issue would be that everyone will buy him Curious George presents for his birthday. I have a friend with a DD named Madeline who has a roomful of Madeline books and toys, and a friend with a son named Thomas who has every Thomas train, book and item of clothing in the book (but so does my 3 yo son, and his name isn't even close to Thomas, LOL!).

Go for it! I especially love that it honors a beloved member of your family.

I immediately associate George with our current president, so it doesn't have a good connotation for me. I can't even listen to a word he says without cringing.

However, I do love that George honors your great grandfather. Would you consider using it as a middle name? Out of your other choices, I really LOVE the name Henry. So cute for a little boy, and sounds most intelligent & handsome for an adult.

I think Henry George K--- would be a fantastic name!

Best of luck to you!!

George is a great choice.

It has significant family meaning, it slides right in with the names that are popular today without being popular, and it sounds cute on a tot AND strong on a man.

What about George Andrew or George Henry?

Keep us posted!

This is the OP - thanks to everyone for all of the helpful comments! I am pleasantly suprised by the number of replies! I think we have pretty much decided to go with George, but the mn is still up in the air. Henry and Andrew are strong contenders - our only concern is that we might want to "save" those for future potention sons. ;-)

Thanks again for all of your help!

I don't think I mentioned this before (sorry if I did LOL), but if it's between George Henry and George Andrew, I'd definitely opt for Henry. I actually love both names, but George Andrew, unfortunately, sounds a bit like Georgeann Drew (which could easily be a girl's name). Just not the best pairing. I'd definitely save Andrew for a future son, though, as you mentioned! ;)
