Just tell him you want to save Eugenie (u-zhay-NEE) for a girl, then you're off the hook! ;)
Or, if you don't forsee any girls in your future, you could also appease him with a name for your son that's related to Donald Eugene, but NOT Donald Eugene.
For example, you could use ...
Donovan -- nn Van, not Don Donal -- nn Al? Or maybe as a mn instead Eoghan -- said almost exactly like Owen, this is used as the Irish/Scottish form of Eugene Owen -- you could use this as the Anglicized form of Eoghan, if you're concerned about pronunciation (but I do prefer Eoghan since it's obviously closer to Eugene in appearance)
Eoghan Donal is nice, and a reversal of your husband's name (but different forms so your son still gets his own name). ;) I also like the idea of using Donovan, nn Van, if you want to name him for your husband without using the same name and nn. It's also a much more modern-sounding version if you KWIM.
Back on the Brayden thing. I wouldn't use Braden because if you shorten it you end up with Bra, or you could make it Bray or Brae. I just wouldn't want a boy to be called Bra.
HTH, clearly I voted for Brayden. I believe it also has the best meaning.
