Help! Too thematic?

Hi everyone! I was sent over here from another board. Need some opinions!

I am due in 4 weeks. We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl. But it's the girl name that is causing the trouble.

Dd is named Aspen. Dh and I met in CO and used to snowboard a lot. For this possible dd, we THOUGHT we setted on Breck (short for Breckenridge, another ski resort) but now we are both getting cold feet because we don't want to be too cheesy, kwim? BUT we have to have a complimentary name for Aspen, to be fair....since Aspen has a *story*.

Help, opinions appreciated!

Some people might pick up on the theme, many probably will not. Another bigger issue (IMO) is that Breck is not a very feminine name. And people may mistake it for Brooke.

Breck is very masculine sounding to me.

I agree that Breck is a little too masculine. However, I've heard the suggestion Brecken for girls on this board. I was iffy about it at first, but it's really growing on me. Especially if you coupled it with a feminine mn. I also agree with the other posts that perhaps you could choose another special time your family has spent together and try to base names on that. Hope that helps!

Well, I don't really think Breck is all that great a name--and it doesn't seem to fit that well with Aspen. OTher ideas: you could stay with the Aspen theme, but make it something only insiders would know. For example, other Aspen-themed names might be for other peaks, runs, etc. in the Aspen area. Such as:

Hayden (for Hayden's Peak)

Kristi (both for the double-diamond run and a play on stem-christie)

Bonnie (for Bonnie's restaurant)

Ruthie (for Ruthie's Run)

Nell (for Little Nell)

Other Co. ski towns:

Well, Meredith is a town very close to Aspen, but I've never been there so it could be a dump

Telly for Telluride

You could maybe just do sort of nature name that's Colorado oriented, such as:

Cascade

Lake

Lark (for Colorado's state bird, the lark bunting)

Or you could pick another vacation spot that you and your DH have enjoyed and use a place name from that. OR you could be extra sneaky and GO RIGHT NOW to somewhere amazing that has a great name and use that:)

Either way--Good luck!

LOVE the pp idea of choosing a cool place name and then taking a special trip there! Or if you can't make it there right now (being quite pregnant), it could be the name of a place you've always wanted to visit (and plan a trip for after the baby's birth).

Other than that, I suggest Brecken, nn Breck. Brecken and Aspen go well together.

Good luck to you!!

I disagree, I don't think this name has to have a "story" just because the first one did.

Breckenridge doesn't even begin to sound like a first name. not feminine at all. Aspen, on the other hand, is a known first name. not heard a lot, but a known one.

Breck reminds me way too much of the shampoo. no one would be thinking "ski resort" with that anyway.

I think you should just find a name you like a lot and give her that.

Well I'm sorry to say, but personally don't like Breck it sounds a little masculine and harsh to me. However if you hadn't mentioned how Breck was related to the CO area I wouldn't have made the connection personally. I wouldn't find it cheesy if I meet two girls named Aspen and Breck. Another idea I don't know if you've thought of how about Winter since you love winter.

Good luck to you

I don't think that you should feel obligated to give your child a name with a story because you did with the first one. Way too much pressure on yourself!

That said, I think Breck is a really cool name. I met a little red head girl name Breck last year and her mother told me it was an Irish name. Many posters have mentioned the Breck shampoo thing, but keep in mind that shampoo has not been around for many many years and children born these days will not recognize Breck as a shampoo.

I also don't think that anyone would think that Breck had anything to do with Breckenridge unless you told them so. So you could do your theme idea without worrying that anyone will pick up on it.

Let us know what you decide!

If it matters to you, Breck shampoo is making a comeback.
