Looking for honest thoughts on the name Merriwether.

I saw this name the other day and can't shake it from my mind. Would consider using this for a little girl in the future.

I would consider it no more than I would consider "Pennyfeather" for a name (which I wouldn't consider at all). ;-) I understand what you mean, though, I can't help but think it's kind of cute...but then it also brings to mind weather reports...and it seems a little last name-ish to me. And the "wether" part looks misspelled to me...not that I'm saying it is, but it just looks it. lol...kind of like how "anyways" doesn't seem like it's a real word... ;-)

While I think it's a little too avantgarde as a fn, I might consider it more for a mn.

well, best of luck to you! :-)

I don't care for it. Kids can be cruel and I can only imagine the teasing that a young Merriwether would have to endure. BTW, my sister's name is Meredith, nn Merry, and she's had to endure all kinds of jokes about Christmas.

For me I just think of the fairy on Sleeping Beauty.

I think of Merriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Then again, I'm a history buff.

OOhh, I'm really not lovin it! It kind of made me cringe a bit, sorry! It just seems very flighty, and too whimsical to actually name a child. Maybe it's jus the connotation with Sleeping Beauty and the good fairy named Merriwether. So thats my HO on the name.

Ummmm, no. 1. It's a ln, if itn's not in your family tree, don't use it. If it is, put it in the middle slot. 2. It's the name of one of the fairies from Sleeping Beauty. 3. It's not attractive at all.

If you like this why not Meredith or, my favorite, Mary. Mary is so beautiful & underused. Possibly use Mary Heather as a double fn or as a fn & mn & call her by both. Pretty much the same sound, but a more *sensible* name.

I have to say, I love it! I've thought of it (even for a boy, since it's traditionally a boy's name), but I don't think my husband would go for it for either a girl or boy. He shot down Peregrine, which I also like (and is also technically a boy's name, but I like it for either).

I really really like it, but as you can see by the other responses on the board, you will not get a good reaction from some people. Not that you should choose a boring and common name just because everyone else is! But if public opinion bothers you, you might want to consider using it as a mn.

But I think it's nice!

Good luck...

:)

hmmm NMS at all. Please don't do that to your child. I can only imagine the teasing that child would have to go through. JMHO Tonya

I too have a little Sleeping Beauty fanatic in the house, so my first impression is the fairy in Sleeping Beauty. :-)

Honestly, it's nms, but if it has special significance to you, it would make a nice, yet unusual middle name.

JMHO!

Did you know that if you do a spell check here at ivillage on the word anyways that it does not recognize it as a word?
