Horrible Spellings!!!

Does anyone else cringe at ways of misspelling names-just to be different? I don't hate all the different spellings, my Hannah is spelled Hanna, but my sister's friend recently had a baby girl named Cadence. I love this name by the way. However, she spelled it Kaydance. It really made it cringe. What a way to mess up a beautiful name!

Does anyone else come across this problem?

I've seen a few too. A little different is fine, but some are very strange. A few that come to mind:

Bronzeson
Kaylub

I don't dislike all non-traditional spellings, either. But I agree that some are pretty bad. The types of spellings that make me cringe are the hyper-phonetic spellings (Aymee, Kaysee, Dalyla), the ones that substitute K's for C's (Kaleb, Konnor), the ones with y's in place of other vowels or extra letters (Abygayle, Madysyn, Daeliey), and the ones that just CAN'T be pronounced the way the parents insist they be pronounced. Of course, people have the right to name their children as they see fit, and if someone loves one of these spellings, so be it. But I don't think I could allow my husband to name our child Kaydance, even if he loved it above all other names/spellings. I would cringe on a daily basis.

You have just named several of my naming pet peeves. I also am bothered by the random capitalization a la MacKenna, LaTrice, etc. My SIL named her child Jourdain, and insists that it be pronounced Jordan. My thought is, if you want it pronounced a certain way, you should make darn sure that you don't trick it up to look like it's pronounced differently.

As I've posted before, the WORST was someone who wanted their daughter to be "different" so they named her Izabehl. On the playground, she'll still be the 20th Isabelle!

This is my biggest naming pet peeve! Especially when it's done to make a super popular name "different." All

LOL...when I named DD #1 Niamh I had so many people telling me I had to spell it phonetically because no one would ever be able to say it. To me Neeve and Niamh are just not the same name *at all*. Niamh is full of history and IMO beautiful plus I adore the Irish mythology (Niamh of the Golden Hair...my Niamh has golden hair too :)

ANYWAY....people think I am being inconsistent when I vent about the random mispellings of names given my children's names (Rhys, Niamh and Isla)...but I didn't make up those spellings...they are the originals for the names (although Isla can also be spelled Ayla or Aila depending on which people/culture you are pulling it from). My thought is that if you want a different name you can find one easily so there isn't any need to butcher a very popular name to make it different KWIM?

There is a woman on our board who named her daughter IzaBella. Wrong on so many levels! This is one of my biggest peeves too. Just curious, is Niamh pronounced "Neeve?" I have seen this name written many times lately, but I admit, I don't know how it is pronounced.

Honestly, it makes the parents look like idiots, and eventually the kids once they are grown.

Out of my 4, everyone mispronounces my 3rd child's name which is Agustin (pronounced Augustine). Both Agustin and Augustine is the correct spelling, we just used the traditional spanish spelling and is a family name.

Even if you look up St. Augustine Florida you will find it spelled St. Augustine and San Agustin.
