Horrible Spellings!!!

Does anyone else cringe at ways of misspelling names-just to be different? I don't hate all the different spellings, my Hannah is spelled Hanna, but my sister's friend recently had a baby girl named Cadence. I love this name by the way. However, she spelled it Kaydance. It really made it cringe. What a way to mess up a beautiful name!

Does anyone else come across this problem?

Yes, Niamh is pronounced NEEV or can also be pronounced NEE-iv. It's a Gaelic name. :)

Niamh has always been one of my favorite names.....I first heard it on the British show Ballykissangel, which is my all-time fave.

"I also am bothered by the random capitalization a la MacKenna, LaTrice, etc."

I agree. I also hate when people put a random apostrophes (sp?) or hyphens in a kid's name, like Nona-rene, Da'Nae or ma'Kylla (and not, the lower-case letter is the front is not a typo).

I was at a b-day party, and I was telling someone about how my cousin is going to name the baby he and his wife are expecting Keenon, whether it's a boy or a girl. I said that I don't like it for a girl (even though I woudn't tell my cousin that), and this one lady said, "Well, maybe they can just 'pretty it up' by capitolizing one of the middle letters or putting an apostrophe in there somewhere." I just smiled and gagged inwardly. What would that be? Kee'Non? Keen'On? Ugg! (BTW, her daughter's name is Ni'Kayla (pronounced like Makayla w/ an N in the front.)

So many things are wrong with that, I don't even know where to begin!

I am actually a promoter of being unique and doing whatever you want no matter what the accepted version is.....
so I like Kaydance!

Sure, it will constantly be mispelled by strangers...but those that know her will know her spelling and her uniqueness!

PS...all my kids have "traditional" spellings....I didn't like having my name constantly mispelled by strangers....

But won't she be unique, even if her name isn't butchered to high heaven? I mean, her parents get to be the creative ones, but she has to live with the corrective fallout.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves, and I agree with the pp. The child is the one that ends up suffering for the parents attempt at uniqueness. I think that fact is often lost - a name does not make a child something, a child makes a name into something.

If you really love a name ie. Cadence, Isabelle, Mackenzie, whatever... then use the name. No hyphenating it, adding random 'y's, or capitalizing different letters does not make it a different name. After all the kid is still going to say my name is "Is-ah-bell" to which she is going to have to then add the phrase "spelled I-z-u- capital B- e-......"
How annoying.

IMO.

Just to play devil's advocate though (I do agree that cre8tive spellings suck but....) I think unfortunately we all need to accept that you are pretty much going to have to spell your name every time it needs to be written down. Even Jayne/Jane has two spellings for crying out loud.

My DD#2 has Isobel as a middle name. That wasn't us being creative that is the Scottish version of Isabel (and it happens to be the way DHs gma spells her name and since she was who we were honoring it made sense to use her spelling KWIM? There are at least 5 or 6 "acceptable" spellings of Isabel...more if you get into the ethnic variations and those aren't IMO cre8tive. I have a friend named Ishbel which is another Scottish version of Isabel (though granted it is a phoneticized version of ISEABAIL which is IMO prettier (ish-uh-bel).

So naming is complicated and while I personally find trendy made up names icky there are a lot of people out there who cringe at my children's names too so I like to live and let live LOL.

I'm not even a fan of the small changes in names..my nephew's name is Jacob, but my best friend named her little boy Jakob. It just seems a bit akward to me...Another friend also named her little girl Lynnzie instead of Lindsey/Lindsay. I wasn't a big fan of that either....

I like Jakob, and since that's a traditional spelling in most European countries, it doesn't bother me at all. Lynnzie, however, just looks strange to me.
