My friend is thinking about naming her daughter Alcina and I think she's pronouncing the name wrong. She's saying "Al see nah" but I'm thinking it's "Al chee nah". Then today a coworker said it's "Al kin ah" Aaaah! Does anyone know for sure?

I've never known anyone with this name, but all the baby name sites I've seen it on seem to agree on al-SEEN-nah (probably about the same as your friend is saying, I'm sure). Here's a link! :)

Incidentally, it did make me think of Al Pacino. ;)

Thank you! I sent that website to my friend...she will be so happy to know she was right! Though I'll never hear the end of it!

Well, it really depends on the part on the country you are in, your (or your friend's) background. Correct me if I am wrong, but the way that you pronounce it, it seems like you have an Itallian or mediturain background or strong influance. On the other hand, sounds like your friend has a more Anglo influance. And as for your friend at work, it sounds like she had a more Northeren or Western Amerian influance. And really, it all depends on how the mom and dad pronounces it. Take my name.... Andie.... looks simple, like "Ann Dee", but I have gotten "On Dee" and "Ann dye". so, I go and correct people to say "Ann Dee". And once the little one hears all of the differnt pronunceations, she just might like a different than what mom and dad have been calling her :) I hope this helps you and others out there. Good luck!

No problem. If you do a search for "baby name Alcina" or something to that extent you should be able to find it on a bunch more as well ... I just knew I'd see it on there recently. LOL Glad it helped. :)

I pronounce it like this: "Alice. Er, sorry. I mean Allison. Oh, wait... Al--er--Alseena?" then I think to myself, "Al's seen a what?"

Sad but true.
